Thank you for reminding me to order one. I've got an oil change coming up in a thousand miles (or before I go back to Arkansas for the fall)

    Yeah.
I've got to do the old 4Runner, probably could use a diff refresh as well since it has never been done. Used to be that all our vehicles used the same filters, so I'd buy a case of Toyota filters and crush washers at a time. I'm set on filters for a bit on the old '06.

Anyone else have a collection of various low-end oil filters they had to buy to get the deal on the oil? AutoZone, LOL.

Nah I'm too lazy and just hit up the dealerships with coupons lol. I always say I'm going to do it myself but then when the time comes I get lazy and take it in.

My front skid plate takes a pretty good beating as is, so I'd be concerned that would get sheared off. I see they make the short or no nipple version and I'm sure it's convenient, but without a really stout skid plate protecting that thing, I'd have to pass. Between rocks and heavy under brush in our woods and trails, too much risk for me.

I did front brake pads this past weekend, took less than an hour, super easy by compressing the pistons and swapping pads, then removing the excess brake fluid from the reservoir with a $1.99 turkey baster. OEM pads lasted 80K so reploaced with same. Also changed the oil, air filter and refreshed the cabin filter. Drain and fill on the tranny and tire rotation coming this weekend, and still undecided which tires I'm gonna put on. Gettin ready for a trip to the Rockies...

    Yeah.
That's kind of what I was thinking, and removing the plug doesn't really bother me. Plus, I am terrible with plumbing, so adding any kind of valve would likely result in a leak for me. Ask me about my septic system repair attempt sometime, best as a campfire story.

Which vehicle are you working on? The LC or your Taco? On the 2nd gens, they started selling a cheaper version of the OEM pads than what came on the vehicle, not sure if they do the same on the 3rd gens. You can still get the better ones, not sure if it is worth it but that is what I did. On our '06 4Runner, I think it took as long to get the vehicle on jack stands and the wheels on and off as it did to do the pads. Never even had to pop the cap on the fluid reservoir, it just went back up to the full mark.

Working on the Tacoma. As much as I'd like to take the LC to CO the Tacoma is way more comfortable, faster, has satellite radio and I'm just not that familiar with the LC mechanically yet. I'm going to add an antenna, already have the all pro racks for the RTT, and just added a leveling kit. Thumbs up for the improved ride with the new Eibach suspension.

As far as pads go, I just went to Lander's parts dept and asked them for the pads for my truck and took what they handed me. I think they were 40 bucks after the Razorback Land Cruiser discount. I'm curious if I can take a front Tundra recovery loop and replace the passenger side 'tow' loop to beef up the front recovery point on the Tacoma. Going to experiment with that. If the holes match up, some new 8.8 bolts and should be good to go.

I wouldn’t use those valves for the same reason. It’s pretty common for these to be torn off by road debris in normal passenger cars. I’ve seen several blown motors as a result. Some pig mats and a flexible funnel are my go to for mess free oil changes.

    Yeah.
With the skid protection on the 2nd gen (I haven't even looked at my drain plug yet), I wouldn't be too worried. Anything that got in there with the ability to rip the valve off would likely do some pan damage regardless. But probably a really bad idea on a passenger car that sits lower and has less protection. Like I said, I'm just bad with plumbing, fine with wrenches. And cheap. And only have to do it once a year anyway.
