Agreed. And since he bought it on sale, he should be able to get his money back, if not make a small profit. That's a 2100 tent, and he paid 1700. You can talk about morality of selling it for more than you paid, but that's just business.

Don't abuse a return policy and ruin it for those who are actually dissatisfied with a product.

Bingo. I also bought a Tepui through REIs sale but have yet to use it. I was going to go with the cheaper Smittybilt one just to see if I would actually use it, but the 25% off at REI was too good. My logic was always I could probably get my money right back out of it since I saved almost $300.

Personally I don't care about a companies "bottom line" unless I'm a shareholder. Its not my job to make sure they run their company in a way that makes them the biggest profit. If they cant run their company efficiently then the free market will do it for them.

I agree not my job to care about the companies bottom line, but it is my job to get as much value for my money as possible. And when a companies bottom line hurts, or the share holders aren't getting their money, then we pay more.

But we are going back and forth on morals, to each is their own.

Not exactly, at that point another company will find a way to sell/produce the item for less.

Whose decision was it to have such a forgiving return policy?

In the context of this discussion, this is highly applicable.

Which is fine. Reasonable minds can disagree. Unfortunately, you've oversimplified and mislabled this discussion as one of morals, and that's quite unfortunate and myopic IMHO.

On the other hand, OP did ask for advice on TW, the wisdom of which is always highly questionable.

A lot of people on their "High Horse" talking about morals and values. How about the fact that most of the backpacks, shoes, etc. that are for sale in REI are produced in some overseas sweat shop which is then sold here at a substantial markup. Yes, such a virtuous company.

I like to think TW is a helpful community with like minded people. The type of negativity and lecturing going on in this thread drives people away and doesn't help build TW. I understand joking and fucking around but there is alot of guys here bashing his "ethics"

    You bought the tent.

    You didn't rent it.

    It's now yours.

    Find opportunities to use it.

OP asked for moral advice, that's what he is getting. No body is bashing him, just providing how their moral compass would steer them in a similiar situation.

This is a self-identified LEO asking the forum for moral/ethical advice.

Let that sink in for a moment.
