To change the subject completely. We are wanting to mount our RTT to the top of my wife's 4runner for a weekend trip to High Falls in Ga in October. Opinions on Roof Racks? She does not have a sunroof.

 

OEM, with hardshell RTT.

I have OEM sports bars that I absolutely hate! I am still waiting for my buddy to get some free time to build me a replica of the attached below. But if he can't get to it soon I am really tempted to do the DIY Prinsu that ole dude did on here.

 

She does. I have read that the bolts ends once there is load on the OEM rails will hit the roof itself. They will carry the load of the tent no problem in transit and the static load too but they will bow towards the roof of the 4runner when we are in there. The cross members are useless and will not hold the load from what I have read. This might be a trial and error thing I dunno. I would definitely prefer to use what is on there.

Our German Shepherd with bad knees can't jump in my Tacoma cab and there is no way to pick him up and put him in there with the limited amount of space between the door and the cab without getting his legs in a bind. It hurts him and he whines terribly when we do it.

so the dog comment is to say you have to use the 4runner, correct? there are lots of options out there, prinsu is popular but not necessarily worth the funds. could get a custom one made.

 

Well we don't have to but it is definitely the better option when camping with a 90lb German Shepherd with torn ACL's. So much easier to put him in. Yea they definitely don't give away the prinsu. I don't understand why they give you roof rails that are almost unusable. Then they paint em. Why? Should be linex'd from the factory for use in the field and more space between the bottom of the rails and the roof.

 

Since we are on the subject of roof racks I want some opinions on what to do for my ARE shell.

It has Yakama attachment points but Amazon wants $175 for the

just depends on what you want. if I went back and did it all over again I'd probably get the yakima stuff myself because my hardsell tent doesn't work great on the prinsu.

 

Any way you can use shorter bolts on the RTT mounts?

 

What brand was your tent?

 

my hardshell is the Waypoint RTT from ChandlerDOOM. My soft shell before it was the CVT Mt. Shasta.
