Hey guys I am currently testing for a job with Kodiak Fire Department. I was just hoping that there might be a few guys here that could tell me a little about living up there as I am from Oregon, but have always wanted to at least visit AK. Any insight or pictures of the area are welcome, thanks.

I've only been there for a week. There's a Walmart there, but it's definitely a small town and island feel to it. I have some pictures I should be able to dig up from a work trip a few years ago.

My cousin worked there at the Navy weather station. He used to entertain us with tales of the giant bears - whom terrified his wife by visiting the neighborhood. This was probably too long ago to be relevant.

He told me once that a bear came up to the building where he worked - and standing up - looked in at him through the second story window......

Not that far fetched honestly, they are home to the biggest grizzlies.

If you like rain and the outdoors, it's great. If you don't need city things to keep you entertained, it's great. Fishing, hunting, hiking, camping, etc. All in the rain. I loved my time there. Wish we had never left. Such is life. My time there is where my fondest memories come from.

Lived there for 2 years. As a city boy from Miami, it was hard at first. Learn to love the wet outdoors, and the wildlife and you’ll have a blast.
