I've hauled 2x8s that long just putting the bottom in the front of the bed, weighting, straps and having my buddy be the pilot car behind.

 

There is still some potential for the end of the timber by the cab to slide sideways or to pop up. That end could use some securing, but that is my tendency.

 

Also another option is to close tailgate, put that extender vertical, put timber at 45 degree angle.
Who cares if it’s 6’ above you cab.

I use a trailer for long stuff. Boat trailer for real long stuff.

 

Should've picked up a few more ratchet straps at Harbor Freight. You're putting a lot of trust in those dinky straps on the extender... $10 for a four pack is cheap insurance. The most used item in my garage by far. A load like that could easily kill people on the highway.

Seriously, you do need something bright to warn the drivers behind you.

 

I would've tried to mount some wheels on the back and put a hitch coupler on the front and "trailered" it. The extender is far more sensible
