Return it. Buy $300 dollars worth of REI branded gear. Sounds even to me.

Nope....I suggest that if HIS dad had given him appropriate advice - back when - he wouldn't have this moral dilemma.

Possibly. But I dont think its your place to judge someones morals and ethics, or his fathers... Its negativity like yours that drive people away from TW. Remember this a place of like minded people who share the same interests and come for help and good times.

My opinion is that he rushed into a purchase without having a good grasp of what kind of set up works best for him. Should he return it? No. But if he wants to sell it privately, go right ahead.

No need to jump down his throat and disrespect him and his father.

Hey, I agree...take a deep breath....re-read POST # ONE.....OP is asking for ADVICE (post title)....Is your opinion any less critical than mine or the previous 80 plus responses? The responses on this post are TAME (and many lame) compared to many posts on TW - LOL

Return it. Rei will just turn around and sell it at a steep discount to someone else, so your doing somebody a favor.

Let me know when you do so I can keep an eye on the garage site.

Don’t be a shitbag. Just sell it privately if you don’t want it anymore.

Agreed. I dont want to get in a pissing match with anyone. I also dont want to see a fairly new member give up on TW because of a few dick head responses. Again, we all come here to bullshit and appreciate the love for tacomas. Not to fight. Cheers brotha:cheers:

I had a friend who, every 2 years, returned his RV batteries to Costco just prior to the warranty expiring. This went on for years. He was well within the definition of the return policy, but talk about a total Dick move!!! That never sat well with me and that sort of mentality will ultimately effect the consumer. This, on the other hand, fails to compare. If it was me I’d suck it up and take the potential loss but if OP feels in his heart that purchasing to use 1x was not his original intention then I wouldn’t call the return unethical. Certainly not right in my opinion, but hey we’re all just a little different. This whole thing is marginal at best. I see at least 10 people a day blatantly running red lights because they didn’t plan their day out very well. As a result, they put other people’s lives in danger and sometimes lives are lost as a result. Now that’s morally fucked in my book!!!

That's shitty. There's a reason backcountry and rei keep rolling back their return periods.

They also sell cottage company brands and products made here in the states. If you're living in the 21st century you've bought a product made in shitty places at some point in your life.

Some of the post here are downright naive.

REI is not some mom and pop operation thats being taken advantage of and will go put of business when someone returns an RTT.

Do you really think the board of dierctors just came up with a return policy on a whim and implemented it the same day? No, they vetted it six ways from Sunday and after their team of 15 corporate lawyers vetted it some more they decided it was good for business.

Do you real think they didn't take into account that customers would use the policy to the fullest? Of course they did but they figured they would still come out ahead knowing that the return policy was one of the draws to purchasing with them. People are more likely to take a chance on a product if they know they can return it later on for whatever reason.

And while some of you are crying over the spare change REI might be losing (if any) think for a minute how much it cost them (or NF, Marmot, etc.) to have one of their tents or any of the other REI branded gear manufactured in some sweatshop in Vietnam and then sold to you at some inflated price. I'm sure their looking out for you though.

So you want to screw over a company with a generous return policy simply because they sell products to make a profit? You should probably sell your tacoma, bet they made a buck off you with their sale. Good lawd man get back under your rock.

Businesses are there to make money. They aren’t there so you can fuck them around. Imagine if everyone you encounter each and every day didn’t give a crap about you or how their actions affected you. How about your boss / employer not giving a crap about you, your life, your finances and screwing you over because there is nothing stopping them (the rules allow it)?

The fact you even question this as a moral dilemma says enough about who you are. Someone with morals wouldn’t see this as a moral dilemma. Hope life treats you the way you deserve.

There was a time when people had morals, their word meant something and they did the right thing because that’s what you do. Now people look for loopholes, look out for number one and take everything that they can every chance they can get. Those same people cry foul when the rest of the world plays by their rules and they get the short end of the stick.

    Lots of fun stuff
Thank you for all the advice... I only got through the first page of responses... I made the original post on the pooper just before hitting work this morning. Been running electrical in a basement since and just got home... gonna catch up with the posts tomorrow and follow up with a better reply.

Thanks for the Taco love... she's my baby. I'm generally agreeing with the aftermarket sale rather than the return... just doesn't feel right to return it after having used it at a festival. I'd be inclined to keep it up there but it makes this incessant whistling noise I can't hinder.

Hope you guys aren't tearing me apart in the other 4 pages of posts, lol.

Hahaha you’re in for a good read. Half the people think you’re a fucking monster for even considering it and the other half think rei is a dick.
