Best Buy advertising higher than regular prices as sales?

Could some Best Buy "sales" not really be sales at all? Shocking, we know, but stay with us for a minute. As Consumerist reports, the mega retailer seems to have recently begun advertising some laptops at prices that are actually higher than their regular price, and then taking things one step further by placing "as advertised" signs on the laptops in store -- thereby giving consumers the impression that they're getting a deal. A tipster to Consumerist specifically sites laptops like the Dell and HP modes advertised for $649.99 and $699.99 in the latest ad pictured above, which are apparently $20 and $50 higher than their regular price -- previous laptops advertised at higher prices also now seem to have gone back to their regular price. Of course, all of this seems to technically be on the up and up, since Best Buy isn't actually advertising the laptops as being "on sale" but, if it is indeed a regular practice, it's definitely not doing a service to customers, to say the least.

Update: So here's the deal: Best Buy is bundling 6 months of its Ask an Agent and Virus and Spyware Protection packages into the offers. Each would normally cost you an extra $20 ($40 in total) which Best Buy is now giving away for "free" with the inflated price tag. Hey, we're sure you were going to buy those anyway, right?

People, please, use shop online to find the best prices. I recommend newegg.com and Amazon.com

    Check sites such as edealinfo.com

If you don't do your research, you are bound to get burned by both the product and the vendor.

I use pricegrabber a lot, but I'm liking the google checkout promo notifier for chrome as well

You nailed it. Don't make any purchase without doing homework. Retail stores are not there to do you a favor. Let the buyer beware!

Its called a business. They exist to make money, not to give you the best deal. If someone is stupid enough not to do their homework then they deserve to be taken. I've been in that same situation and I wasn't mad at the store, I was mad at myself for not doing the research.

I bet Jake would be the first to agree. He gets his stuff at cost and knows how much they mark things up!

I used to shop at Best Buy a lot back in the day for CDs/DVDs, stereo equipment, appliances, etc. But now you can almost always find a better deal online with minimal effort and usually with no sales tax and free shipping. The only reason I go there now is if I want to physically inspect something like a camera or laptop before buying it somewhere else online.

And there are times that I've accepted paying ridiculous prices in order to have the wires RIGHT then. (I was hanging a TV on the wall and I needed a few sound cables and I didn't want to take the TV down again.)

Checking online for price comparisons and product reviews is a must. As for which stores I enjoy walking in, I still like Frys Electronics and CompUSA when they were on just about every block. Best Buy...... NO!!

Both those prices are the regular prices of the laptops and the definition of as advertised means that it is in the Ad, not that it is on sale. Maybe we should look at a Best Buy Ad again and see that there are two different things, those advertised and those on sale. Everything from the ad has an As Advertised ticket on it in store. And the yellow card has nothing to do with anything except that's what they use for the price tag of every single thing they sell

Best Buy is advertising items that they sell. The print doesn't actually indicate sales for marked-up or original priced items. There is no big conspiracy, there is no trickery - its business.

CompUSA was no bargain, either. But I had a credit card with the and Best Buy and always had both maxed out. Yay for no more credit cards!!!

Best buy sucks! Never matches any lower price item from a different store and pretend that they have a price match policy. I use this store only to physically touch the item before buying online.

In Best Buy's defense, at least their new products are actually new and not returned merchandise. :p

Fry's? = I get xbox 360 games for my son and my daughter's DS games. Windows XP OS and Office Home & Student 2007.... everything new.

CompUSA = two of my laptops, bought new, that have since retired.

Best Buy = 4 of my Magellan GPS units that crapped out (number 5 which is a lesser model is a winner) and when asked if they have a replacement..... they say go to the next store that has it in stock and twice (2) times the next store are out.... customer service issue?. I did buy a iMac from them with some store credit that I had.

I'm talking in regards to Frys. They actually had a lawsuit a few years back for taking returned items, putting them back on the shelves, then selling them as new merchandise. In other situations, they would put a small white 1.5"x1" return sticker on the box in a random place, which customers usually missed until bringing things home. When the customer returned with the item for repair or missing items... things got difficult.

The only good thing about buying from a place like best buy is that you can take it back if it effs up. The employees there don't know jack about 90% of the products there, and pretend you don't exist until you get up in their face and ask for help. The flip side are the places like Brandsmart who operate on commission. Their employees won't leave you alone for 2 effing minutes.
