Double Cardan joint

Quality Trans in Rapid City, SD rebuilt my 5 speed. They also rebuilt my rear drive-line and replaced those u-joints in the double cardan joint. They are now greasable. They did one hell of a damn good job as well. Got rid of a little vibration I had from the U-joints.

 

It's generally recommended to avoid Moog parts. Matusba is the only one that is a trusted replacement for u-joints. IIRC, Matsuba is what is used in OEM driveshafts anyway.

Not to mention "Moog 280" is an outside clip style joint and non of the dimensions match.

Yes it has the double cardan. Mine broke between the two.

 

Wow. I Should have read this thread before I started this journey. Had lots of vibration so started having UJoints replaced and figured while I'm at it I'll swap out the carrier bearing. After everything was bolted back on the vibration is worse. I think he messed up the ball joint in the middle. Based on everything I've read as well as the money already spent I'm gonna find the newest drive shaft I can find and swap em out.

 

So, I will be heading to the junk yard soon, to find a rear shaft replacement for my 2000 extended cab manual 4x4, and as I understand I should be looking for a tacoma (With same specs than mine) that was produced till 2004, shouldn't I? On the picture below shows two different types of DCs, mine is a Type A, If I find a Type B will it fit on my Tacoma?

 

I have in fact previously read this... "liked" it even, yet that did not stop me from trying everything imaginable to get those UJoints out. Now I'm just going to put the damn outside rings clips back in, grease the hell out of the 3 zerks and hope for the best.

 

how much does 0.002" make on the cap? The Moog 369 is what Advance Auto has listed as an exact fit for the 2003 Toyota Tacoma as an outside Ring clip style at 1.063" cap, however all other UJoints are inside clip - the

Moog 387 with a cap diameter 1.142". I maybe finding out tomorrow if I can get the DC apart.

 

With respect to a hole in the one inch range, 0.002" is the difference between a press fit and not a press fit. IIRC that joint is also a a tad wide, known as "lock" distance or the distance between the clips.
For some time, parts houses have incorrectly listed that size joint as the correct application. Why, I don't know.

 

Has there been any updates to this thread? Anyone have any success rebuilding/repairing the outside clip style DC joint??

 

Here is another option for the outside clip U-joint, no idea on quality, but size is right on the money...anyone tried these??

 

I talked a fellow thru one. He was the fellow who found the Rockford #2540 joint. Same procedure as the inside clip style only the caps don't need to be pushed as far making it a tad easier.

Good deal, I had heard some talk of another source/brand a while back but no solid info.
I looked up Powertrain Industries and low and behold they have a location right here in town. Moderate coincidence right there. I'll have to check them out.
I'll put a link to your post in the write if you can confirm fit.
Did they list it as a Tacoma application or did you find it thru a "dimensional" chart/list? Not going to comment on the "KOYOU" name till more is known.

EDIT.......So a little later I ran the 1351-25 part # and it came up as a 1.063" cap diameter not the "reported" 1.065" of the Rockford 2540. The Rockford 1.065" spec came from the fellow that found it. He also said it was not in the catalog and had to ask for it (at Rockford). So I guess we will see.

 

I just had this happen last week. I have a u-joint thread I started. I had to take it to a driveline shop and pay $400 for them to rebuild. Was it the best option? At the time probably. Is there a better one? Idk. The new cardan they installed is not a Toyota part and has otc parts and 1310 u-joints. But I should get another 100k at least. Shop says they new oartbis better than the stock. He certainly could have been blowing smoke but hey, they had me fixed in a Friday unless than 2 hours. I would say money well spent for a part I’m hoping to get me to 200k miles.

Not sure if you can tell. It was impossible for me to take apart the Dc joint. I just don’t have a vice or a plethora of pry tools. The tail shaft and axle side with the inside clips are pretty easy but the sizes of the replacements are tricky. I’ve heard Toyota’s are rather tough to size the ujounts properly over the counter.

That new DC looks exactly like the one offered on the Powertrain Industries web site as a replacement for the Toyota DC joint...bet that is what they put into yours.

The ujoints I removed from my outside clip DC measured 1.063" on the caps, they were the original Koyo joints and fun to remove. Had to actually use a metal bladed sawzall
to get them out!!..but they did come out. The joint closest to the shaft side came out easy enough, but the flange side one .......agggh. Centering ball and pin appeared in good shape and not damaged or worn much. Rubber seal was also good, so I just greased it up thoroughly with fingers crossed. The Powertrain Industries joints pressed in well with a big jawed vice and I used a 12mm socket to finish the final few thousandths so the snaprings would fit into their grooves. Pumped them full of good quality Valvoline bearing grease and put it back into service. So far, so good, no rumbles or weird vibes of note yet .. As you say, time will tell. Good to here, the fellow that reported the 1.065" could very well have been mistaken. I'll put a note in the write up.
