Driving the new Taco to OBX for its first road trip!

    Driving from PA down to the Outer Banks for a week of vacation. Looking to do a little beach driving, a bunch of surf fishing and a shit ton of beer drinking!

    Any suggestions on beach driving (other then don't mix with the beer drinking) or surf fishing for down there?

    When are you going? I will be up the the week of July 4th. I can't wait to drive mine as well. This will be its first OBX trip.

    Not everywhere this time of year, in the off seaon, yes you can drive most placed. You can drive on the beach down on the oregon inlet and up north in Corolla. I believe there are always some places way down in hatteras. Where are you staying?

    I love the OBX. One day I plan on retiring there. I have been going there just about every summer since I was a kid. I missed last summer and now i'm having withdrawls. One more month and I will be there.

    Im staying in Corolla right on the beach basically... Ive heard really great things about it down there. Im hoping for some good fishing too. I just read fishing was just starting to pick up down there. Praying for good weather! :rolleyes:

    Awesome. Well then you should be able to drive on the beach up there. Are you in 4x4 territory? basically the paved part of HWY12 ends in north corolla and you have to drive on the beach to get to homes north of that area.

    I will be staying in Whalehead in corolla which is just a few miles before the paved road ends. Fishing is usually pretty good there, I like to surf fish at sunset until about 10pm and drink a few beers.

    Its not that far up. I looked on Google Earth and saw where you're talking about with there being no road. We are on one of the last streets before that.

    Can't wait... Vacation is definitely needed for this guy.

    I was there a couple weeks ago -great! Unfortunately the beach isn't as connected as you'd think, lots of spots blocked by nesting sites. Check the NPS website for open areas and restrictions. Can't drive there at night. Enjoy yourself though! It'll be a blast. I did fine in the sand w/ my stock Dunlops and 4-Hi.

    Yea one suggestion

    DONT LET YOUR WIFE DRIVE YOUR TRUCK ON THE BEACH

    Reasons why:
    1. You will be surprised how high those trucks can jump. I know I was...

    2. You will wonder, seeing back of your truck bouncing up and down violently, how long its going to take for your cap to brake free from the back of the truck and spill all your travel bags, toys food on Mile marker 20

    3. You will have to make up stupid excuse to get your suspension TSB done afterwords.

    :cool:

    The good news is you will be pleasantly surprised at how tough those trucks are

    I've lost count....
    I'm heading down to OBX tomorrow too...I'll be about 40 miles south of you on Hatteras Island. FYI most beach driving is off-limits right now due to the National Park Service shutting down access to ORV's for nesting birds. Up north in Corolla where you are at there may be some limited access...but down South where I will be at basically all ORV beach access is closed.

    If you need any fishing tips let me know....up where you will be is not the greatest for surf-fishing but there should be some fish around. You need to head south on Hatteras Island to find the best surf-fishing. Just look for my Taco and pull up a cooler and chair :D

    Ha ha true story, We stayed in Carova 4x4 at 21 mile marker. I did not even air down since i have nitrogen in tires and it would be a waste. I figure out I will air down if we get stock and it is too far to walk to my LC. :D drive to see horses that beach is always open since there are houses there and only way in is by the beach. My wife had a blast driving over the sand. Truck runned perfect plus we had two vehicles there I also brought my Land Cruiser so getting stuck would be fun but with my LC no amount of wheel spin and hard breaking would let me get stuck :( and that's with out the lockers on. We skipping this year ... maybe next year...
