"Charging stations coming to a trail near you!"

I am a fan of EVs. Once the price comes down, they ditch the 12v battery system and the brake rotor / caliper system **, and the next gen batteries happen. That should be right around the time that the Taco wears out?

** If we can have Ludicrous acceleration, we can certainly have Ludicrous braking.

i agree with you....my DC has a lot of room in the back for “full” sized sister-in law.....i got the long bed so i have the extra bed length.......my issue with the F-150 is that it is so big (high) I cant get anything over the side.....also, the price tag......with what I got on my Taco, the F-150 would be near 50k

Big inside also. I like to say that it is a condo rolling down the road with a living room in the rear. Up front, it feels uncomfortably large. The Taco is just right, IMHO. I wish that I didn't wait so long to finally get one.

The DCLB is a great option. If only they offered it with the 6MT, I would have done some very careful measuring in the garage. It would be very close to fitting.

It's my understanding that the reason we're seeing diesels in the Chevy and Ford models is that their gross vehicle weight ratings put them in the light truck category while the Tacoma/Hilux are in the passenger car category which has tighter emissions requirements. That's the reason the HiLux diesel has stayed out of the U.S. market even though it's popular elsewhere. And maybe Toyota knows something about diesel emissions control that VW also knew but decided on a software fix instead. Could Toyota meet those stricter standards? Only they know, and only they know if it makes any sense to the money into the R&D to try and make that happen when balanced against whatever expected U.S. sales that model might generate. And if meeting the emissions standard means a less efficient lower powered engine, low end torque aside, it might tend to negate any inherent advantage the diesels have.

Electric vehicles still have a long ways to go. We have a hybrid and it’s silly because the best we get is 45 mpg. Shit, gas cars in the 70s and 80s got that. Also, the plug ins still don’t go very far.

Although, the electric steering and fewer belts is great, but I’m not certain the maintenance is any cheaper than a gas car.

My buddy leased a Tesla for two years and he’s giving it back. He just bought a Porsche Turbo, the most fun you can have on four wheels (on the street).

Exactly. That is the reason that I can't get on board with hybrids, two drivetrains and the associated weight. We had a 95 Metro sedan (1.3l / 5MT) that we should have kept. It was severely underrated at the time.

I had dreams of an aircooled Porsche, but my bike helps keeps that buried deep.

from what I remember months back paraphrasing a article I cant remember or being able to find, Toyota said they were not going to do any diesels in the near future for the usa market. currently they are dropping diesels from the euro market for any future models. current models without a refresh or new gen release are possibly keeping diesel but most are going gas and/or hybrid. they are pushing toward the 48 volt systems instead of the 24 volt systems.

    euro outlook :

8" is still a lot, though. For comparison, an F150 Supercrew, which has a huge rear seat, is 11" bigger than the DC Taco (43.6" vs 32.6"). BUT man, I wish they did away with the stupid storage behind the seat and gave us more legroom. And a fold up seat like the F150 so you could utilize the whole rear floor.

Agreed on the SD. I like that the cabs are the same as the F150 (i.e. Huge), but that front end......

What a ridiculous statement, a Prius is a 3,000lb+ mid-size car that gets 45mpg+, there's NOTHING from the 70s or 80s even close to being comparable. A 1988 Honda accord got combined 24mpg and weighed only 2,000lbs AND polluted a lot more.

The cheap ass 1970’s Toyota Tercel 40mpg was not a rediculous car or statement.

My friends Prius gets 42.5 mpg and costs $35,000.

The only thing rediculous is how little the “electric vehicle” has come in 100 years.

Should we argue how much carbon is burned when building an electric vehicle?

How about the hybrids when the main battery goes you can’t even drive the fucking thing in gas mode?

I’ll make one thing clear, hybrid vehicles are gas vehicles, not electric. Every single one of them. Even plug ins are gas vehicles.

The “plug in” 2017 Prius Prime has an all electric range of 25 miles then you have to use the 11.3 gallon gas tank, what a joke. It’s a GAS car disguised as an electric vehicle and it costs a shit ton more than a gas vehicle. Nissan Leaf 125 mike range $30,000. (All electric Tesla $100k+ most are not buying)

We’re paying more for electric vehicles with government subsidies and higher priced electric vehicles. The joke is on everyone while governments and corporations around the world sell their “electric” bullshit vehicles.

This is not correct. The Tacoma is a light duty truck just like the 79-95 Hilux/Truck before it, the Ranger, S10, Colorado/Canyon. Anything with a bed for cargo with a GVWR under 6,000 lbs is class 1 defined by the FHWA.

I speculate the reason the Tacoma exists is the Hilux has a GVWR around 3,000 kg, which means it would be a class 2 light truck in the U.S., like a F150, Silverado, Tundra. That would probably not be considered a safe truck to load up to 7,000 or more lbs because it's fairly light. So Toyota probably decided to make a truck that's a little lighter duty than the Hilux specifically for our market. If each truck is 15% lighter duty than an equivalent sized Hilux and therefore has 15% less steel in the frame or whatever that's pure profit for Toyota.

Toyota got burned badly with the diesel Hilux and Corolla in the 1980s. They were dogs, slow even for 1980s Toyotas and made diesel Rabbits look speedy. Toyota is an ultra conservative company and they weren't going to take a risk again I bet. With the VW diesel fiasco I would have to guess the real chances of a diesel Toyota are slim to zero, but who knows.

BTW, the reason I want a diesel Tacoma is off highway range, that's really it. A diesel gets much better economy idling in 4WD low. On the highway gasoline engines are fine, although getting a few MPG between stops on road trips would be nice.

My old 97 Honda Civic HX got something like 48mpg. My neighbor had an 89 CRX HF that got over 50! Emission talk aside, though, today's cars are much safer (hence, the heft). I would not want to get in even a small fender bender with those old tin cans.

I scratched the Taco within the first couple weeks trying to fit it in our garage. Racks, shelves, tools, a 4x8 foldup trailer, a keg fridge, and a freezer on the right side really suck up the space. I'm thinking of clearing out unused stuff from the racks so that I might be able to angle in for more room. A DCLB might leave me with an inch or less. That is with the motorcycle stored sideways on a Park-n-Move. Front or rear depending on the commute. I'd like to get the bike to between the Wife's car and the Taco. I need some folding mirrors though.

wow you're just full of misinformation aren't ya?

-Prius starts at $25k not $35k

-There was no toyota tercel in the 70s, at least not in America, the one from the 80s weighed 1,800 lbs so again, a micro car compared to a mid size which is ridiculous, AND it didn't get 45mpg, more like low 30s.

-Net carbon emissions including production of an EV is still far less than the life cycle of a petrol only car and has been for almost 2 decades, you're repeating big oil propoganda from the 90s keep up buddy ;)

-I've had a hybrid and the main battery died and I could still drive it, so thats a lie.

-I don't know why you're even talking about a prius prime, who cares?

-No one here said hybrids aren't gas cars who are you arguing with?
