I need a bit of input from the painters in the house. I am going to paint a Toyota "T" emblem such that the outer edge is black, with the inner parts being a silver/light grey color.

Now I'd rather not mask off twice, so is the best course of action to paint the entire thing black first or silver first, then mask off for the other color? In other words, shoot black over a silver base coat, or silver over a black base coat?

Also, has anyone considered flipping the T over, to make it look more like a rocket then a T? I was just looking at this today and can't decide if flipping the emblem would look cool/different/stupid....

Yeah- You can lay one coat on the whole thing and then mask off for the other.

I think that flipping it idea would look silly....Like you messed up when you put your grill back together or whatever...

Does it matter which color goes on first though? Not sure if this question is just not relevant, but I thought that the base/first color will affect the actual color put on last.

Thanks for the input on the flip, that's definitely my concern.

I would spray the silver first and then the black. The silver over the black can darken the sliver color. Black will cover the silver better imo.

ohhhh ok. that makes a lot more sense. I was thinking you were actualy gonna paint the letter "T" on your truck

    I dont see a "T" anywhere here :D

I would paint the hole thing black, then tape off the outter ring, the spray the middle silver. a black center with silver outter ring would look like nothing more than a silver circle...you wouldnt be able to see the emblem at all

Since the emblem comes stock chrome, why not just tape off the the outer oval, scuff the inner T, and paint the inside black?

End point colors would be black ring and silver inside. I have a black grillcraft and a black inner would get lost. As for leave-it-chrome, I have a personal thing against chrome, so I will paint the whole thing.

BTW, this is what my grill currently looks like with a TACOMA badge painted a med grey. For the new paint I will use more of light grey to silver color on the inner part.

Oh ok. you want an extra badge to play around with? I have an extra.
Besides being a little crooked, I like the TOYOTA on the front of you grill.
You should color match it with your truck.
    that would look sweet.
i really dig the red and black together

Not crooked, just the angle of the pic, and it's a TACOMA, not TOYOTA, as I cheaped out and used the one from my de-badge. The de-badged TOYOTA was too small, I thought anyway.

Thanks, but I still have another TACOMA badge to play around with. I actually started with a close-to-color-matched version, but didn't like it. The red/maroon color just stood out too much on the Grillcraft for my taste. Conforming to personal style is a bitch, especially if you're not totally sure what you want. :)
