Garage door opener Mods??

I did mine the simple way. Remove clip from garage door opener and use 2-sided tape to mount to windshield over rearview mirror.

 

I do something similar with mine.... However, I'm not sure that this will work for everyone else or not. If you take the clip on the back of your opener and feed it between the steering column and the small pocket where you have marked in red, it'll fit nicely and still be out of the way. I've had several people point out how great of an idea it is.

 

Like I said, sometimes the easiest solution is also the best. Other than needing to replace batteries from time to time that's probably the easiest solution overall other than just clipping it to your visor.

 

Actually, I replaced the battery yesterday. There is a little slit on the side to insert a screwdriver. Cover just popped off. Easy-peasy.

 

In the 7 or so years since I did my mod I've never had to replace the battery.

 

Hmm.. I don't know what homelink garage openers are. am I too young? Hahaha I'm 32. So those were in a lot of vehicles in the 90's and just roll codes until it opens or something.

I have a backup camera in mine and the DIM, so I don't want to replace my review mirror. Although it is loose and needs a quick fix.

I also have a clicker like @MKW has, and might do something similar to his or the PDF. I'd love to get a switch, wire it all fancy, and put it somewhere. But with 115 degree heat here in Vegas, I might just get double-sided tape and velcro it right here.

 

Small red button to the right of USB / Aux port is hardwired to spare opener, zip tied behind the glove box.

 

Google could probably tell you better but my understanding is instead of just having a single code transmitted, which is a potential security issue, I guess in the off chance someone tunes in with whatever device and can then use it, the homelink system basically links the remote to the opener and then the code transmitted between the 2 always changes but they still recognize one another. The only vulnerable time becomes the setup period when the opener is waiting to sync with a remote.

 

You could probably sell that for $125+ and replace it with a mirror with a smaller profile.

 

Here I was thinking this was going to be about modifying the actual opener with high hp smart programmable openers with battery backup, motion detection, app support, schedules, alerts etc.

 

Yeah... That's way too much work for a garage door opener. I just want a simple mod so I can open my garage and use my visor at the same time.. cuz the way it is now every time the sun gets in my eyes and I pull it open my clicker falls off and hits me in the face. Lol.

I like the red button idea.. any button, really. Maybe a fancy switch would work too. So I just hardwire/solder that to the back of the remote and hide the remote? perfect. @jbrnigan

Fuh, I'm out of switch spots. Haha. I need to remove the stock "Aux" switch and add a garage opener tho. I think that's what I'll do. I combined a USB port n the auxiliary into one and wired it to my Pioneer. So now the stock Aux is worthless. Maybe I'll put it there.

I like those clean, simple oznium switchs.

 

Toyota makes a home link mirror, you might be able to score one at a junk yard or something

Na its has my back up camera located in it, its auto dim, and has compass/temp, plus its OEM. Its not much bigger than a normal sized rear view mirror. I think they went away in 13 when they started installing the touch screen radios as standard equipment.

 

They also make overhead consoles with matching center pieces to the Tacoma console (the little square puck between the map lights) that I was thinking of retrofitting in. The wiring is the issue though as it doesn’t just take the same plug. Would be cool and OEM though. Problem is these things cost much more than a $20 module.

 

Sometimes other vehicles take priority...see attached.

 

Not as cheap or DIY as soldering leads/switch to the existing garage door remote, but this is an example of one of those motorcycle garage door opener kits I mentioned...

I took my original clicker apart, soldiered 2 wires from the open/close switch, hot glued the clicker on top of the roof console, ran the wires to a button and drilled a hole and put the button in the roof console between the sunglass holder and the temp/compass, very clean and discreet

Nice! Been trying to figure out the best way to make use of that center piece. I'm going to follow your idea.
