I just bought my first Tacoma this week and the key looked familiar - like every old school corolla/starlet I’ve driven in the past. As far as I remember, these keys sometimes worked on other toyotas.

With that said, what are some safety measures you take to protect your ride from theft?

Anyone use gps? The club? etc?

Not sure about that upgrade. I think that's a part of the TrunkApe protection package.

I have a viper on my double cab and that has power locks and alarm.

My single cab 2.4 2004 doesn’t have power locks or an alarm.

No problems yet and I’m in the Bay Area.

Looking to install a hiding kill switch since anyone can break into any car these days

I've thought about the kill switch option. Figured it would be enough protection for your average car thief. I would think a "pro" would know what to look for and be able to bypass it. But would a pro be interested in my truck? I think not really.

    Best anti theft protection...

Leave the key in and place a note on the windshield:

Please do me a favor and steal this pos...

    Reverse psychology... Works every time.

This guy managed to do it, it’s so simple. Cut the ignition connector off, twist some wires, and hammer out the shear bolts locking the steering wheel.

    Reserected from the dead.

I laughed too much at this post.

I leave my keys in my truck at work 100 percent of the time. If someone wants it, they can have it. 20 years and not one near Miss.

I put my transfer case in 4 low when I stayed the night in SF, imagine what they think when they try to make a quick get away and the truck only goes 2 miles and hour and the engine hits the rev limiter, lol. I also had one of those club devices except it was for the brake or clutch pedal, cant go anywhere if you can't use the clutch.

I went Compustar with gps and every bell and whistle. What I have would cost the public 1000+ for my alarm and I install them so good luck finding my starter wires as I rebundle the factory loom like wiring in a USAF Raptor, but I still worry as many thieves can open your vehicle with a special codehopper tool illegal in the US but they are out there, and I have heard of thieves renting these devices to other thieves for a night. Problem is, I am a damn good aim so if you can take my truck enjoy it.

I've installed two discontinuity switches. One on the fuel pump and one on the clutch start/ clutch cancel circuit (also works on the p/n position switch wire on autos) for the starter relay wiring. But anybody with caster rollers a hydraulic jack and a flatbed with a winch can steal it pretty easily and quickly.

if they really want it, they will steal it (flatbed)

The thing is that thieves don't like to linger around for too long, so the best you can do is slow them down so they'll give up and move on to another car

an extreme method would be to chain your rear wheels to your leaf springs or frame. The rear end would go kaboom if they try to drive it away.
Just don't forget to unchain your wheels if you want to take your truck for a ride, or else it will go kaboom on you ;)

Any type of passive system is probably going to help deter dumbass joyriding kids or meth-heads, but as others have said, if they really want the car they'll use a tow truck and there's really not much you can do other than make sure your ride is insured.
