Finally got the 2018 grille and garnish in today. Decided last minute to install. These damn mosquitos in South Texas have been brutal.

So how the heck do you disable the TSS radar?

Wouldn't that make life so much easier! I turned mine off, but I've got the notice on my dash which just annoys me.

So is it recommended to get the garnish?? Im debating on ordering it but if it’s not needed I do like the look of it without the garnish.

Changed my grill 2 weeks ago and I don't have the garnish. Occasionally, I get a warning that I need to clean my sensor. It seems to be happening less frequently. I'm going to hold off buying the garnish for another week unless I suddenly get persistent issues.

Yeah that thing is not bad an extra 55$ on eBay but still I could use that for another mod hehe

I installed a OEM garnish on my Ebay grill and haven't had any errors. The $55 is worth it for the peace of mind. Just one less issue to worry about.

I used Tupperware (read above and other pages) and it works fine... recommended by most, but not by me

Just picked up my 2018 OEM Pro grill and garnish from a local Toyota dealer. They found and submitted a Pro VIN # for me. Either they really liked me or needed the sale. Anyways it took a few days for Toyota to release it. Thanks all for the 38 pages of great info. I just need to hit the local hardware store to get a few push on washer.

Also just today I installed a Pro hood on my 2018 OR. LOOKS SUPER BITCHEN. Cannot wait to get the Pro grill on.

I replaced my grille about 2 weeks ago. I used a piece of scrap plastic instead of the factory garnish. I get an error almost daily that I need to clean the sensor. It's annoying. I'm going to pull it apart and clean it and see what happens. If it keeps up I guess I'm going to have to go with the factory garnish. But I'd really prefer not to.

    Just starting mods
Hi everyone. New here. I pick up my 2018 SR5 Double Cab tomorrow. Trading in my 11' Tundra Rock Warrior. Downsizing...Planning on several mods. I was able to order the 18" TRD Pro Grille and Garnish from my dealer. My question is will I need the newer sensor harness or is my harness the newer one due to it being an 18' truck? Thanks for any info in advance and this site is awesome...

Some of you were asking about the $120 grill, shipping from either NJ or CA on eBay. I used the above quoted post to help out my install, and have some notes...

Anyway, it arrived all in one box, like this:

    20180629_164432.jpg
    [IMG]
    20180629_173813.jpg

Screws included for the logo, hole/mount laid out for TSS, but no garnish supplied for it, as others have said. Looking at it now this piece might be removable but I needed it so I didn't try.

    20180629_164447.jpg

The sensor mounts just fine, but you can see through the 2 diamond shaped holes and I wasn't having it. Also, since the stock location sits behind the Squiggly Toyota logo (which BTW is NOT a perfectly flat piece of plastic) I figured it would be fine to hide it. As another poster has done, I grabbed my stock front license plate bracket and had my way with a dremel.

    20180629_174832.jpg

The quoted poster mentioned 2 10mm bolts and 4 pop rivets to remove the front fascia. I will mention on my 2018 sport the 2 10mms and 2 pop rivets up top needed to come out, but the side guys did not. After I pulled everything off the top the whole fascia pulled straight out.

Everything else mounted up lovely. No I have not driven around yet to test the sensor, but I'm not expecting any issues.

Completed shots, and some gap angles for those interested...

    Will do!

    thanks; Post pics when done.

Sounds good. I haven't had anything yet and I should being all OEM stuff. I used the adaptive cruise today for 30 min and was solid.

So did the after market grills come with an Garnish that actually looks like the grill? Is it possible that the flat shiny surface from the OEM garnish actually makes the radar work properly? All these post of OEM vs after market (eBay) grills is driving me nuts. The Toyota Garnish looks like crap but we all want the radar to work properly. the question that comes to mind is why Toyota didn't make the Garnish look like the grill. Maybe the protruding plastic of the grill messes with the radar. Thoughts?

I had the same issue, then removed the insert and covered the entire hole with a piece of black plastic... no more errors since.

I just did my China grill and used a piece of blank plastic to shield my sensor. Within a few hundred feet I got a 'Clean sensor' message that stayed one for 2 trips and about 25 miles or so. Then suddenly it went away. Cruise control seemed to be working fine (though i could not get behind anybody for a reasonable amount of time to check the adaptive feature).

Based on what people are saying about the stock garnish vs random piece of plastic vs no plastic i'm going to make an educated guess on exactly what this thing can tolerate - i think it has to do with the density of the plastic shield itself.

Anybody who knows better than me, please chime in - but as i understand it, radar works by throwing out a frequency and listening back for its reflection, then calculating the time it took to make the round trip. Some people are reporting no errors, others are reporting an error for a little while and then it disappearing, and others (above) are apparently reporting daily errors that can go away! I'm sure a piece of kit like this is capable of calibrating itself within a reasonable tolerance, but if it's not getting signal back to itself within the correct 'gain' tolerance or whatever, it's going to say something like 'clean me.'

On the topic of the dealer recalibrating, I'd love to hear from a Toyota tech or from someone with the service manual on what's involved. What are we calibrating? Height? Frequency being used? Power of frequency transmission? All of this?

Some people are talking about having a lift (2.5 inches or so i read) and having some issues. That does not seem like a lot of height for a sensor like this to stop working. Then again, apparently the TRD Pro sensor (which is obviously mounted lower than the Sport/OR sensor) is a different part number from the rest. Still, seems crazy to me.

Point being, what kind of plastic are you non-OEMers using? How thick? How pliable? I am using a piece of flat black plastic taken from the OEM front license plate bracket. I'd be happy to measure its thickness if anybody wants to know but i'm guessing it's somewhere between 1-2mm. However, I don't necessarily think thickness could be the end all answer, as density and resonance is really what it's all about when you're trying to throw frequencies through something.

I'd really love to know what frequencies this thing actually uses (would make testing garnishes possible) and at what power level but from what i'm reading standard radar can be transmitted anywhere above 1ghz all the way up to 40ghz - VERY big range!
