That is a great looking Blackhawk!

It's not a "New Model" Blackhawk - it is one of the originals.

One of the changes Ruger made with the New Models was to add the transfer bar safety system. The presence transfer bar allows the hammer to be down on a live round. When the trigger is in the forward position, the transfer bar is not raised, the firing pin cannot touch the primer. The gun can only fire when the trigger is pulled back.

The original models do not have the transfer bar. On those (yours included), do not carry it with the hammer down on a live round.

The easy way to tell the difference is by counting the number of screws in the frame. 2 screws = old model. 3 screws = new model.

Be aware that Ruger is actively looking for people to send those back to the factory in NH, to have the modification made to the new style of mechanism. I sent my original model Bearcat in last Spring.

    I do know that.

If I had one, I'm not sure I would send it in. Just to keep it original.

Of course, if I shot it regularly, I probably would send it back for the upgrade.

Ruger has a Serial # look up section on their web site that will tell you what year it was made.

Thanks for the information on my Blackhawk. I am going to keep it original and probably just use it if a group of coworkers go to the range with me.

I completely respect that. Turns out when I sent my in, the engineer working on it found what they deemed to be, "excessive barrel end shake". They offered to send it back as is, or replace it with a brand new one. It was a tough choice - a friend of mine had left it to me at his passing, but with the explicit instructions that I use it to teach my kids to shoot when they were of age (.22lr is a great cartridge for that, too). I figured that a newer one, with the enhanced safety mechanism, was probably the best way to honour his wishes.

Like I say, it's a tough call. There's a lot to keeping a gun mint, and just paying attention to how you handle it. Regardless, that's a nice looking piece!

    Nice

S&J Hardware makes some pretty solid tubes for the 930. They also sell a tube with a bayonet lug.

I got to shoot it last night. Rented one previously. My range said his generation seems to have the kinks worked out. I have tiny hands so it’s the perfect size for me
