"There is a soot filter in the muffler called a Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF). When soot levels get high, the regeneration burns it out. There are 2 basic types of regens, Active or Passive. Passive means that no fuel is injected into the exhaust system to add the heat needed to regenerate the DPF."

its amazing if the word Diesel is even mentioned in association with a Toyota truck it sets off hysteria in this place, first off who the hell would want a diesel in the first place higher fuel costs, higher maintainence costs, more stricter pollution regulations when it comes to state inspections, higher initial purchase cost of the truck just because its a diesel. also putting a diesel engine in a mid sized truck or SUV makes no sense at all, since the majority of diesel trucks in the USA are full sized commercial use vehicles and purpose built for that reason, not soccer mom SUVs or light duty Daily drivers whats the benefit of having a diesel. Gasoline engines have evolved into more energy efficient, low maintainence transportation and gas is cheap and plentifull.

Diesel in the next few years?? Really??

    CNBC on Toyota's announcment

    CNET seems to agree

A quick search will provide many more reports of the same migration to full EV and Hybrid by 2025 of 100% of the Toyota and Lexus lines. This is not a new announcement nor is it unexpected with China's added move toward Electric as well as the changes in the EU.

Does that put diesel of the table? Not necessarily, but it is unlikely that any manufacturer will more toward light duty oil burners vs recharge/hybrid drive systems. More likely to see diesel be offered in an expanded or added heavy duty/commercial application.

The gas/electric hybrid Tacoma or the full electric Tacoma will be an amazing truck. 100% torque at 0% speed with electric motors.

Deisel is for wankers who drive motorhomes and call them “rigs”, and put clearance lights on their pickups. I’ll skip the diesel Taco and wait for something that makes actual sense, and has the performance gains without the hassle of a stinky, expensive, noisy, polluting engine that has to spray piss into the exhaust to pass emissions.

    Just my feels.

But if we go all electric on our trucks, how will those guys who have ridiculously loud mufflers or straight pipes hear each other's trucks from 2 miles away?

Have you ever seen all the awesome diesels they have on 4wd action on youtube there in austrailia. Shauno’s “dirty thirty” 60 series land cruiser is turbo diesel and its bad ass as hell. The hilux’s with a diesel, nasty as hell. I would love a diesel in the tacoma nothing wrong with em. I understand the pollution blah blah go electric but diesels have been around forever and still do the job fine...

rolling coal baby, its all about an image and not realistic for mid size pickups or SUVs, if a diesel engine in a mid size were of any value or need the Chevrolet Canyon/Colorado diesel would be outselling the gas powered Tacomas but they aren't even close to it

Diesel can be unpolluted by use of Biodiesel. Most consumers dont understand that there was another option to gas, electric, or hydrogen.
Dont be surprised if most manufacturers are implanting the diesel powerplant into their vehicles and then potentially offer biodiesel.

If they were to do this, what will they benefit from?

Clean, Less-polluting, recyclable and renewable energy while providing low RPM torque figures and most importantly, efficiency.

    Biodiesel has it all.

    Edit:
Dont forget about infrastructure. Moving to electric requires billions or trillions of dollars for development to accommodate electric grids. The infrastructure for diesel is already here. A slight shift.

But, those engines aren't hampered by all the emissions systems needed for sale in the US. I like the idea of a diesel motor only when thinking about the old days, but I sure don't miss driving behind one.

I would be really surprised because Toyota is a business. Businesses make money. Diesel is a terrible business case in a medium duty truck. If it were a government entity then yes, I could see them moving to biodiesel lol.

When I bought my fj one of the salesman was talking to me about the diesel tundra in the works.

This was in February of 08.

Typically sales people know less than enthusiastic buyers.

The last post was deleted for some reason, but going a bit further OT about the new Supra, nothing is going to hold a candle to the last gen. It was a dream of mine.

Also regarding 40% hitting MPG targets, I'm solidly above it with my MT. But, then MTs are way less than 40%. Though, that has usually been my experience with MTs, even when not driving them similar to the test spec. ATs, you gotta nurse them, they're still in the wrong gear, and yet the EPA numbers seem to be a target never achieved.

I had a 1995 Saturn, 4 door sedan. My average fuel economy was about 40mpg, could get 45 on long highway drives. You could sit 4 comfortably and it had a decent size trunk too, and I'm pretty sure it had airbags.

The Saturn referenced above wasn't even a tin can, it was plastic!
    :rofl::rofl:
Pretty cool actually, it could use plastic for certain body panels because it had a space frame chassis and didn't need the skins for stiffness.

Still glad I never got in an accident with it.

So all this talk about EV and Hybrid vehicles is very interesting. I work in the power generation field and I can tell you with 100% certainly there is no way and I mean NO WAY this country has the electrical infurstructure to have mostly EV’s by 2025. Our aging electrical grid can BARELY keep up with a bunch of 8k BTU air conditioners when things get hot. How the F*ck does anyone think we will have the power on the grid to supply these charging stations for cars and trucks!

I worked in a 860 MW Nuclear Generator as an operator for long enough to understand how this can’t happen. Our lines simply can’t support it and we don’t have the Generators to do it. Hell in the summer my plant sells power to NYC via Canada through hydro lines because they couldn’t transmit enough power on the lines we have.

Oh and our Governor here in NY forced the closure of Indian Point Nuclear station right by the city, so now they’re gonna need even more power from somewhere.

    Electric Vehicles for everyone. Hahaha!!

    Right
