Caliper tension pins

Has anyone had problems with their caliper tension pins becoming loose and allowing the calipers to make an awful clanking noise everytime you hit a bump? My 2009 Tacoma sounds like a bucket of bolts everytime I hit a bump or hole in the road. It's on the drivers side front wheel .

 

Not me but I have read of this somewhere on here before.

 

Take it to the dealer.......get it fixed. $hit happens. As long as the dealer resolves the problem and it's not reoccuring, I don't see any reason to be upset.

 

If I'm reading this right, I think you are referring to the pins that hold the brake pads in place. If your calipers are making a clanking noise then the caliper mounting bolts are loose, not the tension pins. It's possible that your pads are not held in tightly and causing the noise too. But the pins do nothing to hold the caliper in place. The pins are there to allow the pads to move when the brake pedal is depressed. I would get this looked at right away. Brakes are nothing to mess around with. Imagine not being able to stop, scary.

 

X2... you're still under warranty... Let them figure it out.

 

THIS IS THE DAMN SOUND IVE BEEN HEARING! everytime I go over a bump my front end goes "clank!" but when the brakes are applied it doesn't. And now I've noticed it makes the sound when I first hit the brakes.

 

Same sound I'm getting. It appears to be the pads free floating (which they should be) "pad slap". Several have been to the dealers and they claim it's normal.

Noise when brake is first applied in either direction or when riding over bumps.

It makes the trunk sound like a bucket of bolts

Noise will NOT happen when slight brake pressure is applied.


I'm going to try and re-grease between the pad shims with a quality disc brake grease. The spring retainers are present and installed correctly.

I've read that the Tundra suffer from the same noise.

Any more info would be appreciated.

It's normal, all Tacomas do it. If it bothers you there is a TSB for it, it involves changing the rotors and applying grease to the shims.

Mine doesn't.

My VW did after I did the front brakes.
The pads were slightly out of spec and rattling in the calipers.
I peened the edges of the pads where they fit into the calipers and replaced the retention springs.
No more rattle.

 

Its happens when your pads become just a little bit more than half way down. Mine did it too, when I replaced my pads, it went away.
