Vibration on acceleration

I have read several posts about vibration during acceleration and have a similar problem with my 09 Tacoma (6 cyl auto, 4WD, 1000 total miles.)

When I accelerate at a normal rate in first gear, I can feel a vibration in the steering wheel/center console as I go through about 2000 rpm or 10 mph. It does not happen in any other gear or at any other speed.

I cannot notice it when I let the vehicle idle down a hill and then slowly accelerate. It is also not very noticable when accelerating up a very steep hill. It is pretty minor and you must be on a smooth road to notice it...it is almost as if the back tires are going over a series of very very small speed bumps.

Any of you Tacoma gurus have any thoughts on this? Should I have the dealer look at it? One of the salesmen told me it was the result of "loading up very tight leaf springs with no resistance (weight in the back.) It will get better."

 

My truck has been doing that since new and it has never gone away. In fact, I now have a vibration between around 42 and 48mph in addition to the 18mph vibration. Have about 13,000 miles on my truck and as soon as I pay it down a little bit more I will off it...not a happy camper at all.

 

i've got the same thing on my 09. first gear only. it doesn't really bother me, so as long as it's not causing any problems i'll probably just live with it. unless they come out with a TSB for it, which seems unlikely.

 

The only vibration I get is when I get into the 1800-2000RPM range.

Seems normal enough.

 

to me it doesnt really seem like a vibration but more of a "shudder" through the truck. mine does it all through 1st, up to about 22mph and it is magnified when towing heavy loads. it seems its most definitely the center carrier in the 2 piece rear drive shaft, the cross member just isnt rigid enough. swapping to a one piece shaft sounds like the best solution but is there a real reason that toyota made it the way they did?

Great News! Thanks for mentioning this Beef! I've beat my head on the service manager's desk several times over my 'shimmy' at 15MPH. I've even had a tech ride w/me and had them 'document' the issue....now I have the goods.

I'm on the phone tomorrow to set this up.

I think that I'll do that. I appreciate the info. Just one question, though: If in fact it is a faulty carrier bearing, wouldn't the shudder/vibration get much worse with increasing RPM's? As I said, the only time I feel it is between 10-15 MPH in first gear only.

 

The TSB is for replacement of the rear trans mount the shudder is not in the drive line itself according to Toyota.
I think it might balance its self out at higher rpms or your just not feeling it. I have a shudder right around 12 13 mph but haven't changed the mount to see if it goes away or not I am blaming it on the tires right now.

 

Not to keep beating this horse, but has anyone has this TSB done to their ride yet? Driveline Vibration between 15-25 MPH 0132-08. It came out in mid July.

Curious to see if this actually solved anyone's problems...

 

I get this same vibration, did you ever get it fixed, it cant be normal, only at 1800- 2000 rpm+ in every gear at this rpm ...

 

For 2005-2008 Tacomas see this TSB, I am not sure if this carries into the 2009's. You will usually see this shudder and light load and throttle like going up a hill and just accellerating enough to keep speed. I hope this helps

 

I have a 2009 and jsut recently had an OME read spring pack installed with new shocks. I had the front done too. I had the front done a few weeks ago and did not notice any change. They just finished the rears today and now the thing vibrates like hell in the low RPM and speed range. DAMN IT! i woudl say yes, looks like it carried over. The odd thing about it... I either did not notice it at all during the first 4000 miles of driving or it came about as a result of the rear leaf pack... thoughts?

 

On my '07 Tacoma TRD it was the Carrier bearing causing a severe vibration when accelerating, most noticeable from 20-40 mph. All 3U-joints were replaced since they were in bad shape also after 144,000 miles.

 

My guess: It's happening in first gear because of the torque delivered to the rear axle, causing axle wrap. This changes your pinion angle for a brief time and sets the u-joints out of phase. The weak stock rear springs are the cause, and if your drivetrain alignment is a little off to begin with, then you get exactly what you described. Is anyone else getting a very quiet hum with this aswell? I have one that's consistent with my speed and has the described vibes here
