OEM oil filter cover

OK, so I finally put on the aluminum oil filter cover found on TW threads, TOYOTA OEM #

$51 15620-31060 15643-31050

15620-31060 from Amazon and it went on smooth, everything same as plastic cover, new filter, O ring in right groove, cleaned engine side threads, oiled everything and put it on, cover was torqued to spec and it butt up against the block. Wiped any oil around area. Drove for 50 miles and found it weeping where it meets block. Checked oil, no loss.
Looked up part on Toyota parts and it's for an Avalon! Local dealer only has # for plastic cover, anybody else have this problem? Really like it, plastic cover looks like it would give probs later on and it was a bear getting it off, tight all the way!
And yes I searched and found nothing about this problem. Any info would be appreciated.

 

The part # will not show Tacoma because we only get the plastic version from the Factory, I am sure you are just seeing a little residual oil and will be fine.

Vbpiper, the only guy that used to crush cars got busted by EPA for contamination in ground, so nobody's takeing cars for recycling......and Toyota's are gold over here, it's crazy...towing company's are storeing cars all over the place! I know it's an eyesore!

 

Got mine from Amazon too. Never an issue.

I put the same cover on my Wife's 4Runner. Like Shakerhood said you are probably just seeing residue from the change. I too did not feel good about the plastic one that is why I changed mine.

 

Well I changed mind out to this aluminum one and had a small leak too, so I went back to the original plastic one. No doubt it was a leak by the block and the o ring was installed correctly and filter was more than tight.

 

Get the Baxter Performance adapter and use a normal spin on filter. High quality part although a bit pricey at $195. I use the WIX 51348 which has more filter area and has a drain-back feature which you don't get with the canister. Oil changes are a breeze and you never have to remove it again.

 

Definitely interested in doing this, changed the oil for first time last night , is there any clearance issue with the stock skid plate ? Also how do you know which wix filter to use ?

 

If the plastic one is so bad why does the upgraded one leak?

 

The Baxter one doesn’t leak , it’s the other shitty designed Toyota one

 

I ordered my Baxter Performance adapter today $ 199.99. for my Wife's 2017 4Runner.

 

Plenty of room with stock skid plate. Filter size/thread is called out from Baxter. Just happens to be the filter used in 2nd generation Tacomas. I use WIX but you can get any other brand to fit, goes on easy and you can get both hands on filter to loosen/tighten.

Pretty easy to install. You will need a 1" deep socket and a 12MM allen. You have to remove the silver retaining clip on the side of the OEM canister and you can just pull it out with a pliers. Lube the o-rings on the adapter, thread in, and tighten to 25 ft lbs. Then thread in the nipple (I used a few dabs of blue loctite) tighten it down with the allen wrench and then install filter. Because the filter is vertical to the motor, you can fill it with oil before screwing it on. Instructions did not call for loctite, and I contacted Baxter about that. They said it was optional, but I wanted to make sure the nipple would not thread out when I loosened the filter.

 

Great, another "thing" i didnt know about that i have to have.With this adapter and a Fumoto EZ-Drain, oil changes will be easy and clean. thanks for the info.

 

Any idea which fumoto fits the 3rd gen? I see several models.

 

Question for the ones that have the Baxter adapter.
Since the adapter with the oil filter can have a larger capacity of oil compared to the OEM cartridge filter, is there a loss or reduce oil pressure in the engine? Is the OEM oil cartridge volume calculated to the engine oil pump?
As example, you have an air vacuum pump (house dust vacuum) with 2 houses, one standard 2" and another one 4" diameter. The smaller one will have more suction power compared the the larger one.
