I stand corrected , I should have said Canada is the largest supplier of oil to the US , well caught .

as a geologist and an environmental enthusiast, i agree with brunes from page 1. I am going to be sent to the big easy for clean up in the next few weeks (i work for an environmental consuulting company which is linked to the EPAs Emergency response team). It is a terrible thing that has happened, but this is the first time it has ever happend. No one could have forseen this problem. The rigs have shut off valves that close when there is a pressure spike, this is the first time in the history of these valves that one has not worked. I have worked on a few oil rigs and have a general understanding on how they work.

I am in no way trying to down play the environmental impact that this spill has created, and my thoughts and prayers go out to all the families that rely on the ocean for food and a means to survive, but if you look at all the oil spills they have actually helped the environment in the long run, again, not trying to down play this disaster. It is very similar to a forest fire, yes it is devistating imediatly, but micro orginisms come in and eat the oil, shrimp and other small feeders come in behind them and so on. Look at prince william sound....life is more abundont there now than it was in the mid 80s (Exxon Valdez spill was in 1989). Its a terrible thing, but mother nature has a way of turning everything into a positive.

I hope no one takes this the wrong way, just wanted to give my .02 as a geologist who has SOME experience with the oil and gas industry.

    Best wishes
    Eric

Go watch the 60 minutes segment where they interviewed one of the guys who worked on the rig... This happened because of GREED!!!! They wanted the oil out NOW and to H*** with the consequences of ignoring safety protocol.

i never understood why they did not dump several tons of rocks on top or that thing to stop the leak. it is 5,000 feet down you could cover it up with 50 feet of rocks seal it with concrete, and problem solved. instead they keep dicking around with all these high tech solutions, and the leak is still going. it is amazing to me that man can create a floating oil rig, but can't stop a leak ? there is no reason it should have gone on this long.

They should be required to have a no fail way to stop the leak before they are even allowed to drill and potentially start one.

These imbeciles are throwing darts at a board over a month later. Bullshit.

I agree 100%. It is a shame for the Gulf States that this happened, and will leave a long lasting impact, but the Gulf States have made billions of $$$'s through the years from all these oil reserves and jobs, it all has been a gamble, that is now coming back to haunt them. It will be made right, I have some faith that all is being done as Brunes said. Coming from a Coast Guard guy I feel confident in his statement.

Supposedly the "blowout preventers" were a no fail to even let a leak begin. I guess we learned that this is not the case, they do fail.

The oil and gas is coming out of the pipe at about 3000 psi , you'de have to drop a whole lot of rocks and the oil would more than likely still make it's way through all of the seams except now that the well head was buried with rock , what would your " Plan B" be ?

Yes, you've discovered the solution that has been eluding hordes of industry and government engineers for over a month now

Please don't go down to the Gulf and volunteer.

Why are you belittling him, that is pretty much the plan of your so called "hordes of industry and government engineers"
The only difference is they are using drill mud instead of rocks

Except for the part about pressurizing drilling mud...and it doesn't have gaps between "pieces" because it's a liquid suspension instead of solids.

Yes, top kill is exactly like dumping a bunch of rocks on top of the well.

If you don't understand why ludicrous shit gets belittled, I can't help you.

I have a suspicion that this has a lot more to do with the fact that Prince William Sound is a lot more isolated from human interaction than the Gulf.

Not saying that nature won't correct itself, but that area in Alaska sees about 1,000,000 times less human influence than the area of the BP spill.

Nature corrects everything when left alone.

I haven't had the chance to read up on all of the facts to comment on it.
But I would like to give my respects out to everyone that died on that rig, and their families. Which hasn't got a lot of attention by anyone it seems like in the media.
And everyone that is going to be affected with their jobs that depend on the ocean and other related jobs.

The whole situation really sucks, that's for damn sure.
