OEM Roof Rack Leak

A couple of months after installing my OEM roof rack and Yakima Megawarroir (with extension...don't forget the extension!) I now have a leak. It dumps a 1/4 cup of water into my shoe and/or soaks the seatbelt.

I'm thinking I've got to take it off, check it out, silicone the bolt threads, torque it back down.

Anything else I should look for/do/consider?

Silicon around the mounts once it’s screwed back in. It should be concealed by the gasket I think.

 

Would you recommend tossing the OEM foam gaskets that came in the installation kit?

 

Are you saying silicone around these brackets?

 

Had the same problem. Just take it off and seal all bolt holes.

 

Sorta. Like @strktly_bodysurf said, seal the bolt holes with clear or black silicon and if you can see anywhere that water might sneak in, more silicon. Just make sure you smooth out the surface and use something clean up the edges if it gets on the paint.

What's more fun, when I put my torque wrench on the bolt, it snapped-off into the mount. HOUSTON....WE HAVE A PROBLEM! Had my zen moment and didn't freak out. Guess that hardware isn't meant to be used more than once!
So while I find the correct replacement bolts, I'm assuming y'all are tossing the squished foam washers, right?

Hell yeah those washers are a joke. It's toyotas attempt at protecting their own rear end by supplying us with "waterproofing"

 

Replace the crap hardware with stainless.
Heads will strip out on oem stuff. Don't ask how I know.
There is that one long bolt you won't find in stainless on the arm.

 

Better that than to find out one day its rusted through by a hole made over the years because water couldn't get out in the threaded area. It's an indication it wasn't installed right.

 

Misery loves company, right? Yesterday one of the front mount bolts broke off.
Where can I find the M6x15.77mm, M6x40mm & M6x19.7mm bolts? Didn't have any luck at my local Lowes.

 

Look in the speciality boxes, you know the ones that pull out.
Thought they had them.
You might not be able to get the exact length but should find something that will work.

Also get a couple of these. They can break when removing.

Thanks to everyone for their suggestions. Replaced hardware with stainless from Lowes (slightly longer, no problems), a dab of blue loctite and generous rings of silicone around each bolt hole. Has been a few days and heavy rains, so far, so good!

 

Are the bolts M6x1x(length)? What lengths did you get and quantities of each? Also bolt head style since the instructions does say wafer head and button head. Sorry so many questions, stripped a bolt and wanted to replace all of them with stainless.

 

I just bought some rubber washers to replace the foam ones before I do my install.

 

Ya'll need to become familiar with McMaster-Carr. Can't tell you how many threads I've read where some poor schmuck is looking for a fastener at Lowe's or some chain hardware store at can't find it.

 

Buy slightly longer ones and use an angle grinder to get it to the right length.
The local Ace hardware has a far better selection than the lowes or HD, but for an oddball length dremel or grinder.


Foe those of us that don't have a roof rack installed, how were those holes into the cab plugged up??
Wonder if they can become a problem.

 

I second the McMaster-Carr suggestion. I have used them for years. Great source if you need something out of the ordinary.

 

Sounds like others are using silicone in the hole & the supplied washer.
