This rig rolled into the shop where i work last week. I had never seen one, pretty cool! And the camper part was actually made only a few miles from my house. Its an 88 with a 22re auto. 4x4 dually.20180621_092005.jpg 20180621_104328.jpg

Looks nicely done, 88 was the last year for carburetors, glad they opted for the EFI. Haven't seen a company convert a 4x4 before. I'd buy it

It always amazes me to see how much weight those little 4 bangers are able to pull...I see so many old beater 80's pickups with tons of weight in the bed or over the back. They might be slow as molasses but they get the job done.

I allow myself one or two "mud runs" a year (not like we get many opportunities in SoCal). I love wheeling in the cold/fog/rain but I try to avoid heavy mud at all cost...way too much of a pain to clean.

Also, last time I did a big wheeling trip in a downpour, all the mud under my truck did something to fuck up my clutch for a day or two...it would start slipping like crazy like it was going out even though it only had 10k miles on it at the time. Been a couple years almost since that happened (same clutch today) and it's been fine since. Mud sucks.

It's funny to think about, but here's some weird perspective. A 1950 Ford F600 2ton dump truck came with a Carbureted flathead V8 that on its best day made 100hp. That little 4 banger makes more and it is only a slight gearing disadvantage compared to the 1950s ford. We are programmed to want bigger and better but we got a lot done with a lot less back in the day.

It's the torque that matters when hauling/pulling though, not the horsepower. Those old flathead V8s made gobs of torque, whereas the 22re.... Well not so much haha. Still interesting to see the horsepower per displacement gains engines have made over the years.

I've been stuck behind quite a few old Toyota Chinooks and campers on the highway. They can barely keep up with traffic. Can't even imagine one of those with a 22re and an auto....

Speaking of wildfires, my friend with a Nissan 370Z came over so I could replace his mirror. His car was covered in ash from the wildfire that’s 40-50 miles away from us.

It really didn't have all that much torque over a 22RE 190 foot pounds vs. 200.
