    Always wondered why they used these pressed plastic pieces in coolant systems - i had the same issue on a GTI i had, all the expanding and contracting of the piping would cause it to crack so easily - the engineers must know something i dont.

    perhaps theres just air in the system that didn't get bled out, sometimes theres air bubbles that aren't completely bled out and eventually they do and the resivoir tank reflects that, so just top off the resivoir tank with SLLC or distilled water till it subsides.

    same here and the dealer said they looked at mine and its fine, just seem to smell coolant once in a while after a long trip

    Yes I did have that done at the dealership. They wanted $900 something but the little complaining I did brought it down $100 or so down. They had to replace the intake gaskets as well. I asked them for the parts which they did give me.

    To add to the VW info... In the 90's, when VW began the move to plastic water pipes. They we're inadequately designed, just like the Taco, and they cracked. Someone coined the term "crack pipe", and it stuck. Aluminum replacement were produced.

    Relentless Fab hybrid bumper, 2.5” Dobinsons IMS lift, RCI skids and sliders, block heater. Painted FJ Steelies. Was trying to keep it stock, now slowly building for the Wisconsin trails.
    So my question is if the bypass pipe is indeed leaking will the coolant system fail a pressure test?

    Yes, it should fail, though it may take a little time to drop pressure... depends on the size of the crack.
