If it’s an off-road with the elocker you will need an elocker to go in it

Weston Pass fire approaching 7k acres. I can see the glow from the fires from the driveway, and its still making its way south from what i can see. Not many houses down that way but plenty of fuel all the way down to the four mile area.

    If you plan on traveling:

285 remains closed from Fairplay to Antero. And now highway 9 is closed from Fairplay to Hartzel. So the only ways out of Fairplay are north or east unless you do mosquito or weston (weston is supposedly closed but i think that's because cr5 is residents only).

I'm off all week. Let me know if you have any days off, we might be able to knock at least one out if not both as long as we have all the necessary supplies.

Couldn't he in theory use any 8" diff? The 1st and 2nd gen Tacoma with lockers are 8" but all the 79-95 trucks rears all used 8" diffs, although finding a 3.73 is going to be a challenge since most will be 4.10, 4.30 or 4.56. There were some 4.88 ratios and some truck did use 3.73 and 3.90, but the 4.10 to 4.56 are probably the majority of them. If it's a matter of just getting out he could use any ratio that might be found if he just sticks to 2WD.

    Try Yota Jim (first choice):
    http://yodajims.com

    Yota Yard (if you must):
    http://yotayard.com

You could try Slee or Classic Cruisers in Salida. Other options are to post on the Rising Sun 4x4 forums (risingsun4x4.com), Colorado Land Cruisers in Colorado Springs or IH8MUD and asking for assistance.

Probably a long shot on here, but does anyone have a recommendation for a good Scottish Terrier breeder? It's been almost a year since we lost our Molly and I think the wife is finally ready for another pup.

You could technically run a regular 8”, but you’d have to make a custom block off plate / gasket combo to seal up where the elocker motor goes.

Also if they did go down this route they should probably get a 96+ 4runner differential due to drive shaft flange bolt patterns. (I’m pretty sure that’s when they changed over).

Here’s the elocker axle opening, look to the bulge out on the right.

Easiest diff to find will be a 4.10 or 4.30 elocker from a runner or Tacoma (first gen). I Personally would find a 4.10 Tacoma elocker and then later swap out a 4.10 4cyl 2nd gen Tacoma front diff #regear

I've never personally modified an axle housing for an e-locker, so it was my understanding that a regular third would still fit and seal around the outside, obviously with only part of the sealing surface at the notch. IOW, the bolt pattern is the same but you have to put the notch in for the locker motor. But it sounds like the shape of the carrier itself may not match so it would leak.

My suggestion is only based on the premise that being stuck on the trail unable to move having the option of using a plain old 79-95 4 cylinder 4.10 third member since those are usually piled up by the dozens in junkyards and would be super cheap (as in I gave away one when I went to V6 diffs with Air Lockers). I agree if you're narrowing down on something more specific that a locked lower ratio one would be a better way to spend money.

Yeah, looking closer, looks like it would probably seal. Would probably work on the road missing two studs.

Also just thought 4th gen/fj cruiser 07-09(auto) 8” non locker would be 3.73 also

You guys are right. The housings are different. So we ended up getting an open diff 3rd and it was slightly different so we are still on the hunt for an e locker 3rd member.

You should be able to use:
    96-02 4runner elocker (4.10/4.30/4.56)
    95.5-15 taco elockers (3.73/4.10/4.30/4.56)
    07-09 fj elockers (3.73/3.93)

The 4.56 version is the rarest oem one, I’ve only seen a couple. They came in early auto 2.7 first gen Tacoma’s when optioned with the elocker, and early 2.7 manual 3rd gen 4runners optioned with an elocker.

Was the open diff from a Tacoma? Those are different, being the so called 8.4" diff. What I'm suggesting is a diff from the older trucks prior to a Taco.

Alright, After last trip and finding my tool bag lacking for 2 items when someone needed to disassembly something.

I was wondering what you all bring, tool wise, when offroading? If you bring fluids like oil, brake, etc, what n how much?
