Thats a little low, but about normal. A BIG factor, what tires are you running? 100LB Boggers or 50LB all terrains? Also if your using your odometer to figure your gas millage. Figure in the amount the speedometer is off, your getting more than 11-12MPG.

Jack up the tire and rotate the wheels to make sure the brakes arent sticking.

Make sure your tires are inflated enough. Even a little extra would help your mpg.

For 25 years, when running oversized off road tires, I never run recommended tire pressure, wares the tires out faster and rougher ride. I stick to approx. 30 psi +/- a few psi depending on weather and tires size. Has worked well for me anyways.

My current tires recommended something like 50psi, on 35's!!! I run 32psi on the street, perfect!

I've seen you truck around town, I thought you were on wide 35's. I'm running skinny 33's one on a good day 85% highway I get 15-16 mpg.

One of the items that doesn't get mentioned in these mpg threads is the radiator cap. As I understand it, if it won't hold the proper amount of pressure, your coolant boils too fast. This can severely affect fuel economy, as the truck is trying to compensate for overheating constantly - you won't necessarily see significant coolant loss because the guys in lab coats programmed the computer to compensate for this, at a loss of mpg.

My wheel/ tire combo is close to 95 pounds per corner and I average around 17 mpg in the warm months. I have a manual trans and skinny 33s, which helps.

It was explained to me by a mechanic friend :notsure:

It seemed to make a lot of sense the way he explained it. Hopefully someone who understands it better can validate or invalidate the concept.

With how much money we throw at our trucks, it seems like a reasonable thing to try.

Yeah, I guess it wouldn't hurt anything. I've just never heard anything like that before.

I wouldn't do it, the radiator tanks are plastic(along with the heater core tanks) so a higher pressure cap can cause premature failure of either or both. If it's boiling over too frequently either something is wrong with it or it's undersized for the conditions, have it flushed instead or get a bigger radiator, a higher pressure cap will not cool your engine better, it will simply allow it to run hotter before it does boil over and increase the pressure inside the system(bad, very bad).

I don't think that's what pigpen was saying. I think he was saying that if your cap is faulty and letting it boil too early, then it should be replaced.

OP has a 2008. The spring or seal in the stock cap could be failing. I really meant just buying a new stock radiator cap.

Exactly. I just wasn't specific enough.

My understanding is that this is a known problem in many other makes. My friend who told me of this had this issue in his 7.3 Superduty. He said it's a common Bronco issue too. His 2003 Tundra had rapidly dropped in mpg also, but it took researching Fords for him to get the idea to change his Toyota radiator cap. He regained 2 mpg.

Thanks for clarifying, makes a big difference. One that cost me all 3(engine, radiator, and heater core) since the shop that reccomended replacing the cap with a higher pressure one didn't think of flushing it. Excess heat kills motors, excess pressure kills coolant systems. That cap is the back up of last resort for both. If it releases early would it cause the motor to run cold and therefore too rich?

I get around 15-17 combined with 33s and a 2.5inch lift. Take into account as these trucks age the mileage slightly decreases.

True, fuel injectors on 5 and 6 especially, start to leak. On 1GR-FE engines.

Maybe this is a dumb question, but if you put smooth skid plates from the front all the way back to protect the trans and drive shaft, would that increase areodynamics? We also could use some full moon rims haha

I think the weight of the skids would negate any potential increase in aerodynamics, even if aluminum.
