Well, I finally had some time to put the evaporator core in. I started it yesterday around 2:30pm and got it wrapped up around 1:30 am. That included stopping for phone calls and eating supper. It really wasn't as bad as I was anticipating, but the most challenging part was getting the crash bar out.
I decided to install a new heater core while I was in there just because I didn't want to run the chance of having it crap out on me after I just had it apart. I still need to get it recharged, but I consider my part to be finished.
Thank you to everyone that helped and provided information.

Hope you locked the steering or marked it, I usually wrap it with shipping tape to keep it from turning when I remove it

The wheel was locked, I never disconnected the shaft. I just removed the nuts and lowered the shaft out of the way.

Thanks Rosscopeeko. I'm glad I did it myself and saved a buttload of money to boot. I definitely learned a lot about my truck.

OP, good job man  Seems like you took a lot of pictures........how about a write-up??? This is going to become a bigger issue as these trucks age.

Ill be replacing mine here in a few weeks. It was replaced 3 years ago when I bought the truck and was replaced by the dealer. I did get a price from a shop for $1,000 and said nope I got this. Thanks for the advise Iamsir2u, that will be helpful.

Updating thread with a data point. Mechanic said he thinks my evaporator needs replaced on my 2013 with 77,000 miles. He quoted 8 hours plus parts.

On what reasoning? A/C not holding a charge? Has he used a refrigerant sniffer or put dye in the system?

Yes, the system was recharged. Refrigerant can be smelled in the cab. Not exactly sure it’s the evaporator yet, but we will recheck if charge is lost.
