    Basicly creating a etching, paint sticks better.
    But then again, if you use your skids properly, you'll be removing the paint right back off anyway. :p

    Thats pretty much what I did on my bumpers and skids.
    scratch them up with some sand paper (80-100grit i think), clean it with some mineral spirits, a couple coats of primer, and then a couple coats of black paint or bed liner on top

    I just used a flappy 40 grit on my grinder on my weld on sliders, did a nice etch to them. Paint doesn't just chip off so quickly.

    I prepped the metal first and then used the paint that has primer mixed in to it. It worked out good. Buy extra cans because you will need couple of coats specially if you don't want to see running paint.

    I used self-etching primer on my sliders, then the black.
    I did also scuff the surface up a bit first.
