Must be something in the water/air over there, what are they feeding them?

I strongly agree. No offense to those in this thread that still live and enjoy it there but I grew up in SoCal, moved away 24 years ago and let's just say I DONT miss it.

Agreed. Boiling point for R12= -21f, R134a= -15. Thing is, they don't run anywhere near the boiling point. A properly engineered system will cool a cabin with R134A. Tacomas, not so much.

I am not sure something like this would be ideal, though I am not sure what R412A's compatibility over to R134A is.

You would think this would contaminate system and cause damage rather than good, but again I am not sure about the cross compatibility. This is the stuff they use in home AC's. The stuff is killer cold!

Yeah I dunno. The guy from killerchiller made it sound like you can throw it in what ever and it just works. I was skeptical to say the least.

In other news, I've made a spread sheet with some dimensions of the many different hvac toyota fans. We may have to branch out further. It really sucks that none of these companys list CFMs or anything. But I am afraid without modification to the hvac housing we might not be able to do much. I would love to have more air flow, with out removing my cabin filter. I've already had enough nightmares with a cabin filter that would have been much worse if I didn't use one.

Ok I just did some more research on that stuff, and if it is HC-12a which is what I think they are selling, the reason no one uses it is "Lack of adequate assessment that characterizes incremental flammability risk" That is straight from the EPA website.. Sooo I don't get why no one has tested this stuff? Like it seems to be significantly less polluting than r134 and it cools better than r12, but no one has assessed its flammability. Makes no sense to me *shrug*

    Guys...

Refrigerant has NOTHING to do with it. If the Compressor is cycling, then the evaporator core is getting PLENTY cold and turning off the compressor.

Like stated the main issues here is OP's airflow across the condenser core, hes supercharged (so has an innercooler in front) and likely has a big ole bumper which further impedes airflow. The secondary issue which is a "problem" for all 2nd gens is the simple fact the evaporator core inside the cab is rather small so it just doesnt have the ability to cool as much air.... but again like stated, not even max fan speed setting my silver non supercharged truck has zero issue sitting idiling keeping the cab cool in 110+*f temps.

Truthfully, any fan in any of the vehicles or other SUV's and trucks that Toyota has pushes more air out than the Tacoma.

Yeah that stuff is supposed to be really good. I don't know, maybe it is worth investigating, especially for our systems.

So I looked on their website and they have renamed it to “Industrial R134a” and something about it not being bad for the ozone it’s not regulated the same as others. Thd only situation where using it is illegal is if using flammable refrigerants are banned which I don’t know what states are. So as long as your system doesn’t have a bad leak and someone is smoking right next to the truck it should be ok.

Yeah I am really tempted to visit a junk yard and start pulling some parts and seeing what could fit. The one issue I see with the tundra fan is the diameter of the blower fan is slightly larger than the tacoma. I don’t know if there is enough clearance for that.

It took my 15’ 10 miles to get the ac to feel cool. Not even cold. We are in a heat wave in Nj. But it’s barley summer.
My 06 Silverado took 3 min idiling to be freezing :angrygirl:

Well they dont really wear out but the oil will break down causing them to not lock up as much. Changing the oil will restore it.

You can also adjust when the clutch begins to activate by the 2 screws in this pic. Changing oil viscosity affects how hard it locks up and adjusting the screws affect the temp of when it locks up.

Don't know what to say about this thread. Maybe the OP does not know how to use the AC. Hint: Push the button and turn dial to cold.

My '11 has blown cold air since new. Been 90F+ here in NH for a while this past week with big humidity. I use the above technique and get cold air. If I didn't I would get it fixed by competent (not dealership) people.

I think my A/C works just fine. I think Toyota A/C units work much better than Hondas. I've owned 4 of each and I'm not impressed with the capacity of Honda A/C units, even in the good old R-12 days. I've driven in 114 degrees crossing the California desert and been nice and cool inside a black 4Runner and my current black Tacoma. Done the same in and Civic, Accord, and CRV and it just isn't as comfortable.

@12TRDTacoma Do you think an f250 blower motor wouls be an upgrade? I’ve been looking and a few of them look like they might fit dimensions wise. Never been in one to know if it’s a weak blower like ours or not.
