2004 2.4L Tacoma Needs A Tuneup : Help with parts selection please

I've had my 2004 2.4L Tacoma(2nd one), for a couple of years now and have put 50,000 without changing out the plugs, pvc, or fuel filter yet. Still running ok but feel it is time for a tuneup. Truck is just short of 150,000 miles.

So I've come here looking for recommendations on which parts to get via Amazon, since I got a $150 gift card there and have Prime.

Not sure if I should ask here or in another thread what parts to get for my tuneup. But for sure I need the following, but would like ideas on if what I have selected are the best or right parts...

I'm not finding the plug boot, spring and top coil seal at Amazon, as I'm probably not naming them correctly, or maybe I just need to pick those up at the local auto parts store

 

Those spark plugs are iridium. Just get the standard dual electrode ngk or denso

 

What is the difference? I also see "Platinum".

EDIT: actually these I just posted are single electrode. You are suggesting dual elelctrode so I assume this:

Also I would assume that dual electrode is not OEM? But what most think is better?

Can confirm. Look to see what the originals are and put the same plugs back in. I tried those exact plugs on my newer 2.7 4 cyl and it didn't like em. Stock densos were the way to go in my case. Stock parts are likely gonna be your best bet as far as keeping the performance as you'd expect

 

I was hoping to avoid having to pull one first. And I am not sure what is in there is original. I was hoping that someone here might know the best part numbers to search for. Didn't all 2.7L small cab manual transmission Tacomas come with the same stock? I bought the truck with nearly 100,000 on it so I don't know what happened before I got it.

Also what is the standard size deep socket spark plug socket for the plugs?

 

Check your manual. Do you have the 2.4 or 2.7? I believe 5/8 is a standard size, and i bought one from Oreilly.

$3 denso k16r-u11 denso 3120 spark plug

denso k16r-u11 from Amazon. I got my 4 pack for $10 shipped. Dont "upgrade" spark plugs. What comes out should go back in.

 

For all it’s worth I changed my plugs in my 3.4L last summer got the plugs at Auto Zone and they recommended Autolite copper plugs for $2 a piece. When I took the first one out it looked like they were factory plugs, they had Toyota on them plus they had 4 prongs on them. The auto lite plugs worked well
I had 230000 miles on them

 

Be sure and replace the PCV grommet also while you're doing it. Age deteriorates the rubber. Cheap.

 

What is the PCV grommet? a video I watched of changing the PCV didn't show any grommet not sure what you're talking about. And when I went to the Toyota dealer the parts guy said my truck has no grommet.

 

Unfortunatly the 2.4/2.7 plugs are diffrent than the 3.4, and having tried the autolight plugs for the 2.4 engine they are not oem. That said even the cheapo autozone plugs for the 2.4 worked fine for me.

All said though I ended up settling on these platinum ones for my current 2.4 taco from Autozone (PK16TT) worked for me. Haha will say any plugs seem to perform the same to me on my 2.4 Tacomas and 3.4 4runners, and any differences were more marginal. The K16R-U11 will do fine (or the NGK equivalent). If you want to go platinum or higher those will work to, but its up to you.

PCV wise I recommend going oem and with a new grommet as well as mac84 suggests. I read that some folks that get aftermarket PCV valves find that they don't properly fit. The one you have linked are incorrect. This should be the correct model (# is 12204-75010):

The oem grommet number is 90480-18001, but honestly you can just get the correct model one from like autozone and have that work fine to for the grommet. Also just to explain the grommet is like a rubber gasket/mounting part for the PCV essentially. Without question you will need a new one as well to go with your pcv valve.

Also the wix fuel filter you found works, but personally recommend getting the oem one as it comes with a bracket as well. That said both probably will be fine. The model number is 23300-79446, here it is on Amazon:

For the air filter the one you chose is fine. Honestly the oem air filter isn't all that special anyways, so most even the cheapest ones on ebays work just fine. Model number for oem is 17801-35020-83.

 

My 2004 2.4L does not have a grommet for the PCV.

And OK so I went to the Toyota dealer and asked for plugs for my Tacoma and they came out with the K16R-U11. They were very reasonably priced at $2.22 each plus tax.

A service guy was there and said that the life of them is about 30,000 or just a tad more. I have at least 60,000 on the current set in the truck. Should be interesting to see what they look like.

He misses in the video showing removing the 2 screws under the air intake/air filter assembly, either where a bracket that supports the assembly attaches at the engine block or under the assembly attaching to thst same bracket. I wonder do most people remove the whole assembly like he does? I wonder what they teach the mechanics at the dealerships to do. Either way I have to remove the main part of the assembly over the valve cover. So his way of removing the whole thing is probably what I'll do.

I had another 93' Tacoma that I put 250,000 on, before selling it for $2800 less than what I bought it new for off the lot(lot-leader $6800) and never took it to the shop once. I did all maintenance on it. It has been a few years since I worked on a Tacoma other than doing the oil, coolant, and air filter. But Tacoma's are so well designed that they are pretty easy to do maintenance on. It might help that I am a boat mechanic of nearly 30years.

 

Thanks, I went to the dealer. I expected quite a bit higher price. Surprised to find out that the dealer was actually less than Amazon. So I just ordered the plugs, pcv, and fuel filter at the dealer.

One thing that the service guy there said that the fuel filter was designed with a flow rate specific to the fuel system, that yes, other brands might be less, but the stock fuel filter will provide the correct fuel flow.

 

Oh I see, my mistake as my info was relevant to another type of 2.4 liter engine which use different components (honestly not to sure the model name differences). Glad you got all the oem parts at your dealership as that's definitely a good way to go.

 

Fuel filter is a pain to get to but is a lot easier if you remove the drivers side tire and go through the wheel well. I would change your diff oil and trans fluid while you are at it. If you have a standard get some Redline MT90 for it.

 

Thanks for that suggestion for doing the fuel filter going through the wheel well. Have you done that before?

 

I highly doubt that the plugs I pulled here at 140,000 miles were stock...

They were Bosch Super Plus FR8DCX+

The one up front in the attached picture with the darker staining I felt was a tad loose.

I replaced with the

$3 Denso K16R-U11 Denso 3120 Spark Plug

Denso K16R-U11 that the dealer sold me.

 

Yup thats how I did my '96 2RZ. Also dont try and remove the filter only, its way too much of a pain. Instead remove the fuel line and the rail and at the connection west of the intake. Then snake the filter out with the short little hoses attached. Wayyy easier. And also if the new filter doesent have the clamp, dont tighten the clamp too tight when you install or the bolt holes wont line up. THAT is a major pain.

 

good choice going with denso plugs , for some reason my 04 2.4 did not like the ngks and started using a lot more fuel , replaced with densos and my mpg went back to normal
