What have you done to your Tacoma today? 1st Gen Edition

My Hobart 140 should be delivered today, which means I have all day tomorrow to mess with it!

Hey guys, you’ve likely dont this a million times, but I need to get those $140 front “strut/springs” and rear shocks out in the next couple days... so I’m looking for a few exact product recs for both front & rear and keeping it all below $500. I’m good with the adjustable fronts, going to stay with the 1” blocks in the back.

Rear now unloaded is sitting 18.25” DS & 19.25” PS bolt to bolt centers. Would 20.5” be enough max extension? I’m gonna blow the shocks out or bust the mounts - already hearing/feeling the large bang on rough road or coming out of parking lots from them maxing out.

Coil Springs up front - need those.

I wouldn’t lift the front more than 2” from OEM.

Thanks, figure this is second nature to you all... to many choices for me to consider ATM.

 

What are you guys using for rear diff protection?

 

Nothing at the moment, but I need to get something to at least help protect the bottom of the diff where the drain plug is. I tagged my rear diff on a tough trail out here on a rock and it messed up the drain plug so I can't get it off now, gonna have to take it into a shop and see what they can do.

Rear diff skids are debated on here a bit but based on my experience I'd like to have at least a little more added protection against tagging/scraping the bottom of it on a rock. I've seen small plates that you can weld on for this purpose, all the way up to something like what BAMF offers (a rear diff "diaper") that protects the entire 3rd member.

 

Yeqah i just looked at the bamf one, but fuck $425 is a lot!

 

yeah it's expensive, and IMO a little overkill...at least for me. The differential housing isn't exactly weak, from what I've heard the front of it is actually pretty thick and can take a beating. It's the back of the diff that you have to be concerned with, apparently it's the weak side. That and the bottom are what I'm most concerned with protecting.

Yes. Though it's not tow rated probably for liability sake. It is super strong and solid though. LINKY. The receiver is underneath the rear license plate. They have flip up license plate frames which I haven't purchased yet but plan to.

 

The Trinova UV protectant stuff is by far the best I've used. I've done the whole Meguiars and Mothers stuff but those don't compare. And it doesn't leave that oily residue on the plastics. I use it on my dash, flares, side mirrors and front bumper maybe once a month.

It's the TracRac system. It was my second purchase for the truck after the linex Whats great about the racks is that they're easily installed and removed. 3 minutes. I got them because I think racks are ugly and don't need to look at them if I don't have to. The only potential issue is that camper shells are no longer an option though that doesn't bother me.

Got the drivers side suspension almost complete then it's time to install the new steering rack

 

OME 880 for a 4cyl or OME 881 for a 6cyl. Neither should net more than 1.5" of lift. Buy nicer coils and you dont have to think about them later, much like I did (I ended up throwing a pair of 3 month old moog coils in the trash). Free shipping from Low Range off road or Headstrong off road too. I think Low Range had a better price on the coils though.

It doesn't. The only thing that really works for that is the 3m set where you use the drill. If they're not too bad though, give bug spray a try. Doesn't last terribly long but it helps.

 

so I see Toyota put a 11mm bleeder on the clutch slave cylinder... as if 10mm or 12mm would not suffice. so much for doing a system flush - not running out to find a 11mm “brake line” wrench.
