First oil change on used truck

I bought my 2015 TRD used from a private vendor early this year. I want to do its first oil change but want to make sure I use the correct oil. The truck has about 28K miles on it.

On the manual it says to use 'Toyota Genuine Motor Oil', but if I can't find that type of oil what other can I use? I did some research and I keep seeing Mobil Super being mentioned. I also see that some talk about going to Full Synthetic.

I don't mind paying a little extra to get the oil that will help with performance and endurance. I just want to make sure it's the correct kind. This is the first truck that I've owned that is worth more than 15K so I'm trying to be very careful with everything I do.

I typically use Mobil 1 synthetic myself, but the brand oil you use is up to you.

 

I switched to Mobil 1 full synthetic as soon as I bought my truck. I’m a firm believer in full synthetic. Sure it’s more expensive, but I love my truck and I’m willing to pay a little more for better oil which will pay off in the long run.

If you take advantage of extended OCIs that come with syn, or you work the truck in the 'severe duty' category, syn is worth the extra.

If you are stuck in the 70s with a 5k OCI mindset, any conventional oil will be fine.

No need for special order boutique stuff. If you can't find it at Walmart or Costco you don't need it. Regardless of what magazines, TV shows and pyramid product dealers claim.

 

5w 30 as mentioned, up to you on brand and type (syn or non-syn). I've been using the Pennzoil ultra full synthetic. It has been shown to retain viscosity better than some other brands, and my Blackstone analysis results with the Pennzoil have been better than Mobil 1. Walmart usually has the best deals on 5-qt jugs. You'll need 5.5 qts, so just buy several jugs while you are at it to save a bunch. The single quarts are too spendy.

The OEM filters are highly recommended,90915-YZZD3. Economical, and good quality. No need to spend 2 or 3 times more for any aftermarket oil filter. You can get a case of 10 for $46 or so

Thanx guys!! Def getting some good info. I'm willing to spend a little more if it's worth it. I just don't want to spend it if it's not necessary. It sounds like good ole' Walmart might be all that I need.

 

You should follow the directions of your owners manual at this point. If you desire more knowledge and how to save some money, just come back to TW on a regular basis. You will be surprised on how much you will learn and spend from just logging in to this site.

 

Yeah, I would normally do that but since I bought it used and I'm not sure what the previous owner was using so I thought I'd check to see what others thought. As I said, I'm just trying to be careful and not overlook something. Maybe I'm just overthinking, haha.

Oh, and I believe you on 'how much you will learn and spend' on this site. Just from this login session I'm looking at all the galleries of the badazz trucks thinking of what mods I can do to mine.

Just rolled 30k in mine, it uses 5W-30 and a standard Toyota filter. Inexpensive and Easy to do. Change your spark plugs as well - also easy to do and required to keep the emissions warranty intact. Standard copper plugs - no fancy iridiums required.

 

Walmart has an excellent low cost full synthetic 5w30 called SUPER TECH in a blue 5 qt .bottle, costs about $16

 

Check your truck's manual regarding the Maintenance Light. It is strictly a mileage counter. Reset when you change the oil, it will flash briefly starting at 4500 miles, and will stay lit when you reach 5000.

It doesn’t make any difference what brand you use. What matters is that you use the correct weight and you change oil at regular intervals. All modern oils are top notch lubricants. No one here can offer any proof that say Pennzoil is better than Castro or GTX is better than Walmart oil and so on.
There is a difference between regular oil and synthetic but again no one can say if your engine will last longer using synthetic as opposed to non synthetic.
There are a lot of expert opinions on oil brands but none of those giving the advice are experts. Marketing and word of mouth is what influences peoples choice of oil.

Even if he responds his results mean nothing. Black stone analysis results apply only to individual engines. The results only apply to his truck, his oil, his engine, his driving habits and a hundred other variables.
You cannot make broad or meaningful statements based on an individuals results. Blackstone will tell you the same. Blackstone is a great company to tell you how your engine and oil are doing but again the results only apply for your engine, doesn’t mean anyone else will have the same results.

 

5.5 to 5.7 quarts of oil with a filter change. Royal purple for me, I grab it on sale for the same price as mobile 1. I'll run either a royal purple filter or an oem Toyota filter.
