They do to auburn. Figure it would be about the same, they make regular trips so it all gets loaded on the flat bed.

 

Ok, that’s good to know. I’ll have to send them an email and see what they can do for me. Even if I had to make a trip to Birmingham every once in a while for steel, it’d still beat shipping prices from online companies.

Yep, the internet suppliers are crazy expensive. McMaster Carr is another option for smaller and specialty metals, and shipping is reasonable and quick.

 

Gotcha. First real steel purchase I’ll be making is some 1x1 square tubing to build what I hope turns out in to a welding cart. Haha. I’ll probably just buy a 20 foot stick if I can find it local.

 

Check southeast truck and body. They are down by the river bridge and fab a lot of the utility trucks. They welded my sliders on.

 

Last stick of 1x1 I bought ran about $17-18. Bought it at a local steel company (Steel getting store) here. Steel places here say there is no scrap and all their smaller pieces goes into a locked dumpster that gets hauled off and sold. You're going to pay less at a actual steel supplier than one of the box stores.

 

Did all your patches sell? I can't access your site from work, they have it blocked by Barracuda

 

I've noticed that around here, we used to just give it away, we'd barely break even after factoring in the hour or two it took to drop off at the recyclers.

 

A welding cart might be a little ambitious. I’d suggest starting with butt welds on plate first.

I’ll definitely be starting on some steel just to practice my welding before I commit to a project. The cart is just the first thing I plan to build. Don’t worry, I’m not that ambitious. Haha.

I ordered the Hobart from Northern Tool. Had the best price I could find. Now just to decide between them or Airgas for the bottle...

I wouldn't buy a new bottle because it's going to get swapped when you go to get a refill. Hell, if you were closer I'd give you a acetylene bottle you could take in to Airgas and swap for a C25.
