Over time oil becomes thinner and is more susceptible to sneaking through gaskets and seals on well used vehicles. If you had to add a whole quart at 2500 you probably have a leak somewhere. That being said, better quality oil holds its viscosity longer and stays "Thicker"

If you're not 100% sure you can always use a UV kit.

how the carrier bearing? mine was doing a weird sound, around the speed you say, and was more noticeable when free of load. I flipped it 180 and no more

Hmmm, interesting. The carrier bearing seems fine but I'll give that a shot since it doesn't cost anything. That would also makes sense because the noise is coming up in between the cab and bed, right where the carrier bearing is.

Maybe I'll replace that first. Maybe it just got fucked from all the dirty water/mud I wheel in

Doesn't mean the shaft is new mine from 05 still has the sticker and looked good until I got a hold of the truck. Also u-joints can feel tight and still be bad.

Oh really! That's good to know about the sticker. I'm going to order all 3 u joints now and go from there.

I had funky vibes @ 40mph. Would get worst if I would let off the gas. I did what @Kemosabe did and flipped it 180*. It reduced it alot but it also told me that the bearing was bad and on its last leg.

IMO it doesn't leaks, and it is oil quality. Each time I crawl under the truck I look for wet spots and where dust could be sticker on oil fumes, and don't see anything that look like I lost a quart lol and if it was dripping, I would see it on my driveway. But still, it worth a look for sure! I'll have to wash the entire engine bay before tho, then see if there is any leak down the road

Which is what my situation is. The needle bearings have worn some pretty stellar grooves.

Try flipping the bearing and see if it helps. It is free and only a couple of bolts

Yea if you're sure your not leaking then you are most likely burning it. High Mileage Synth is what you should try. Hopefully it's not leaking into places it shouldnt. For good measure, check your radiator cap for oil.

You changed my mind Jaime. I decided I'm just gonna tear it all apart and replace all 3 u joints and the carrier bearing in one go! CB is only $50 so it's worth it to save the effort. Thanks for the feedback guys.

Do you think they carry spicer? I'll have to check. This could be a good afternoon project.

Just wheel it! Also what about the IEDLS CB it seems like a much better solution than stock.

I'm more concerned about the 3 hour drive each way. I don't want anything leaving me stranded on the highway!

And I've heard mixed things about those so I'm just gonna stick with oem.

Yes they carry spicer, moog, and some house brands which are usually spicer as well. I also like National bearing they make some good stuff

Yeah what have you heard? I am just learning about them and to me urethane will hold the actually bearing better than rubber. Now there is an old hot rodders trick we would do with spray urethane in motor mounts and such to make them much more rigid instead of buying the actual mounts.
