What have you done to your Tacoma today? 1st Gen Edition

Picked up a full e-locker axle. Just missing the chassis harness. Now I have to decide if I want to make one, or save up and order the Chilkat cable conversion!

 

LROR has made to order harnesses too, but I do think the chillkat deal is smart

 

I know most on here will only use OEM aftermarket parts. However, not everyone on this sight makes over six figures a year either to afford those parts. With that being said, I am quite comfortable with MOOG parts. I did a lot of research on their company, and I am very impressed with the company. Many of their youtube videos show some back bone of their company. My good friend and ASE certified mechanic swears by Moog products, and installs them all the time. He has not had one returned to him that had a catastrophic failure...."particularly the lower ball joints." I am not speaking for everyone, just him. He has been an experienced mechanic for over 20 years now. I do not rock climb or drive my truck rough. I use it for hunting and an everyday driver. I am not at all worried. I am very particular to the maintenance of my vehicle and stay on top of worn out parts. I thank you for everyone's input. So I put in mine.

 

I looked into it. The low range harness seems too pricey for me when I could possibly build it for cheaper. Chilkat is very expensive by the time it lands here in Canada but its most likely the route I'm going to go

 

Oh shit, yeah I wonder which one would cost less to ship. I assume the shipping and customs is the worst part of that. If I had a elocker style axle on my wheeling rig the chillkat locker lever would be what I'd do. The electric motors are cost prohibitive and failure prone. Hell even my rear locker on my Land cruiser is broken and it was never used :/

Plus you can sell your locker motor to offset the cost afterward

BTW... I've been running cheap Auto Zone LBJs for over a year because when I got the ones I ordered came 2 lefts, and I needed my truck back together. I have the set of LBJs that were supposed to go on sitting on my workbench but I've been too lazy to replace them again.

Not one single problem, with the AZ LBJs. I'll be replacing them before hunting season starts, but just because I already have the better set and I might as well do it for more piece of mind.

Id say if your not wheeling/ abusing your vehicle, then aftermarket parts are fine IF you keep up on routine maintenace and checks for abnormal wear. That being said, Ill cast my vote for OEM on something as critical as a ball joint. But for like a sway bar link? I'm running a Duralast part at the moment.

 

To mix with the anti-freeze.

Yeah I don't make that and own 3 of these things to maintain.

 

Why don't you use 50/50, out of curiosity?

 

Just a thought: Maybe it isn’t always a part to blame for going bad, but maybe the person who installed it??

 

Twice as expensive, you can mix it pretty easy, just pour equal parts in the rad.

I already had the two bottles... and when I originally bought the bottles, it was cheaper to buy concentrate than the 50/50.

 

Totally in some cases. Not so in others.

 

Anyone have the part number for OEM ujoints and that double ujoint?

Replaced steering rack & sway bar bushings, and tie rod end boots. Old ones had 175K mi on them.
