It could work out perfectly fine, but I could also see it not. A lot of it just depends how that relationship is and how Babcock goes about things, especially when there are stretches where things aren't going well. If he starts to defer to Tavares and Matthews has to take a major back seat, then I don't see it going w/o problems. And I think Matthews lack of production goes hand in hand with how he was used, which falls directly on Babcock. He should be on PP1, every time, no questions asked. And I don't think he got as good of linemates as he should have already. But that is just my opinion. As far as money, Eichel makes 10m, so he will get more, he is better than him.

Yeah I have to agree to disagree on most of that. Matthews had the same opportunities this year as last year and didn’t look nearly as good. He also had at least 10 games with Marner on his wing and those were his worst games. That’s on Matthews. He’s also 20 so I’m not pulling the alarm yet. Like you said, who knows what’ll happen.

How’s it feel when your Captian is talking to other teams about his next contract? The Sens are a tire fire.

    Find Marty McFly.

Rumors are just rumors, but it sounds like the Sharks were the highest per year offer to Tavares.

If the Sharks got him, we'd be planning a parade already too.

If they could win that way I wouldn’t complain lol. I agree though, while goaltending and the forward ranks are good the defense core is in the bottom 10.

Somewhere in the 14 mil area. That’s insane. He’s good but hell not McDavid good unless he’s Mess in the locker room but I doubt that seeing the way the Isles did.

I think he was the only reason the Isles were even close to the playoffs each year. He carried that team. No, he's not a McDavid, but he's a huge impact player. The kind of guy you want on the ice whenever it matters. The kind of player the Leafs don't really have right now, yet. Matthews isn't there yet.

The Sharks have been to the dance so many times without winning it. I'm sure that factored into the price they were willing to pay. From the rumors the Isles were willing to do either 15.4 million on a one year deal followed by 8 years at 13 million in January or just 8 years at 13 million straight up. The Sharks were at 7 years and 14 million per. The Leafs, well everyone knows what they offered. I would be curious what Dallas, Boston, and the Lightning offered. I haven't much about their offers. I would guess for Boston and the Lightning it would of meant dumping salary right after the deal.

Yeah crazy but with changing salary caps it is a gamble. Take shorter contracts and maybe get more money later if cap rises or possibly get injured and miss out on the cash. Give and take I guess. Probably one of the reasons Tavares didn’t take the Isles offer of the single year option but then again I think it has to do with childhood loyalty and Babcock more than anything. I swear Babcock could sell ice to an northern indigenous person....

Tavares is at a decent hit right now, in Toronto. Anything more than that is not worth it. NYI is better off w/o him and 10mil in their pocket than pay that man 15mil/yr. They could pay him that and try to fill in around him and still be the 4th best team in the division, at best. They are better off letting him go and building around Barzal. In a few years when the Pens, Caps and TB window is closing, then maybe they will be ripe to be a front runner. Paying Tavares 15m or whatever now would've gotten them nowhere.

I think Toronto for sure got better. I'm sure they will be 1 of the better teams in the East. But like I said, I feel like this is going to do nothing but hurt Matthews. Hope I'm wrong. That should be his team, if it isn't they will pay for it, later down the line.
