Has anyone ever tried doing this with the cut the opposite way? You could make it so they stack when not being used and you could fit more, or have a place to hang out. It could maximize usable space. The only problem i see is that they might not be as secure. The first one might flip up if there is weight on just the back. Any ideas?

I've seen some use a center support instead of or in addition to the cross supports like I did. I'm not sure how it would stay in place though. With that method you could cut the platform pieces in the opposite direction.

That's what I did with my first platform. Check my build thread for pics.

You'd really want to have some kind of lengthwise support if the hinge-line is lateral. Using T-nuts or threaded inserts in the cross-beams would allow for a removable bolted connection (with countersunk bolts through the deck) to the support which would add some stability.

Another alternative to making a more compact folding deck would be to use 3 or 4 segments rather than 2, if you want the whole thing removable.

So you think if i just used the boards in front and behind the and in front of the wheel wells that it wouldn't be stable? I thought about cutting the boards at a 45 degree angle so the front one would slide under the back one. I also thought about a small metal bracket on the back one that would slide under the front one and keep it from flipping up when weight is put on the back by the tailgate. It would look a lot like what ETAV8R did.

All I did was use 2x6's across the bed and the platform pieces rested on them. It was quite stable.

Was using a foam pad but wanted some additional storage. Just found this on CL. He built it with 1" ply in 3 larger sections and one smaller-easy to stack for additional room. In addition he made two small "tables" will build a drawer this w/ethumb_DSC_0001_1024 2.jpgthumb_DSC_0011_1024.jpgthumb_DSC_0005_1024 2.jpgthumb_DSC_0004_1024.jpg

Cutting at a 45 might curtail the space you can open up depending on the arrangement relative to the supports. I'd worry about having a hinge line parallel to and betwen the supports regardless of how it's oriented unless you know you'll never have a concentrated load in the middle (like someone crawling/sitting up on the deck or a full cooler pushed forward). I might not be visualising your idea right, though.

M8 bolts with locking T-nuts on the outside. I also used Locktite Red on the nuts to make sure they wouldn't wobble loose. Look up Pask Makes on YouTube as we've all done variations on his drawer build.

Just put mine up on CO for sale post. Going to be getting a Drifter so this platform has to go so I can build something else.

Finally getting to put it to use this summer, storage is amazing, kitchen allows for gourmet cooking off the grid, and though it doesn' have the most head room the memory foam is like sleeping on a cloud. Plus no bears!

I hung curtains my girlfriend stitched up. She also sewed up a mattress cover out of baby changing table fabric to water proof the memory foam. She also made pillows out of excess memory foam trimmings and stitched pillow cases for em out of excess curtain fabric. Bed rug and liner on camper shell make it feel cozy. 5lb propane canister in back, double burner propane stove with cast iron set, silverware and camp cook set in the drawer.

Goal zero power bank in back for recharging, running window fan, heated blanket, led strip lighting. Also have rechargeable battery strip mounted near power bank so can swap out AA/AAA. The smugglers hatches house emergency supplies (jumper pack, air compressor, clothing). Under bed storage bin fits under platform and holds camp chairs, axe, machete, etc. Cabinets hold water resoivoir, cooking ingredients/spices on one side that opens to exterior. Other side opens to interior and holds personal items.

Just camped Monday night in S Carolina. It was a quick trip, short stop, didn't want to lug a lot nor take a lot of time setting up stuff. I had two dogs with me.

    There were regrets...

Anyone used one of these? I saw one that can be used with a camper shell and really thinking about it.
