The LED SAE J583 Fog Pod & Fog Light Review

Sweet. Would love to hear from @Too Stroked about the comparison. Might have a good line on a new set for not a ton of money. I like the look of the XB on the truck but the edge of road lighting performance is lacking.

 

Loved the write up as usual. So do you think the Rigids with the amber lens covers would be comparable to the middle of the pack as far as output for nasty weather? Since we don't get a lot of snow or fog around here but do get quite a bit of rain which I haven't had an issue with white light in but haven't compared it directly to amber.

 

Correct, without cut offs the Bajas are not suitable for street use with oncoming traffic.

I'll test them to give you are more quantitative answer. But if you look at coated halogens like silverstars, they typically lose 20%+ of their light output due to filtering, where they are trying to shift the spectrum away from the natural color of halogen. It will be interesting to compare how this looks for Rigid. I think even filtered the Rigids are going to be in the top end of the pack.

 

Id be real interested to see the difference here, between the filtered Rigid with its higher out put and the non filtered amber KC.

You asked, so here's my thoughts. The KC's beat the Morimotos hands down. In fact it's not even close. Crashnburn's test results pretty well hit the nail on the head as far as the KC's having a better / more useful pattern as well as better color. In fact I wish I'd taken some "in the truck" shots of both sets of lights so you could see the difference. And the icing on the cake is the way the KC's look in the lower grill. Personally, I think they look a hell of a lot better than the Xb's, but as most of you know, I'm more interested in performance than looks.

I plan on testing out the pod covers as they are cheap, but no immediate plans for the amber G4s unless I can borrow a pair or someone local has them.

 

Do you have plans of testing any other types of non DOT offroad lights like light bars, pods, etc? Also the different beam patterns in them like driving, flood, and spot or the combo patterns. I know some of them like rigid and Baja Designs are pricey for testing like this.

Yeah especially since there are a lot of options/models with lights from Baja and Rigid. Those 2 run the gamut of different levels of quality and styles. I'm leaning towards some rigids for my ditch light brackets but really like some of the options for other lighting from Baja

 

I REALLY like Baja designs but I REALLY can’t afford/justify the price, even though the quality is there.

 

They have a lot of interesting ones out there same with Rigid. I have used Rigid previously on boats but never tried Baja. Baja is even more expensive than rigid though on comparable lights.

 

The permutations there would be extensive. But in short not at this time. My primary focus is usually on magnafying output while maintaining beam control.

I already spend way too much on these projects. For one of my upcoming ones I am building a simulated 3rd Gen front end to help those guys out with their headlights.

If looking at Rigid and Baja you really cannot go wrong. Great quality reputable manufactures. Baja’s lights though have outstanding form factor and better light color (lower temp) than Rigid in my limited product comparison. Bajas pods are like a work of art.



Threaded bodies vs frustrating recessed nut and bolt and smaller form factor on the heat sinks giving a more slender appearance along with interchangable lenses.

 

Have you ever thought about trying to make your own LED lights like what Iggy has done. It seems with your depth of knowledge and what would be good for certain uses you could bring some really great products to market.

 

I haven't considered making my own, but I have consulted for other companies. I've got a few things I'm working on to get out into the market a bit more.

 

Excellent write up that answers quite a few questions. I'm not surprised the Morimoto lights have low light output since they took out the rear reflectors. The old silver ones produced a bit more light, but then again mine fogged up. Great work, thanks for testing with such attention to detail.
