Yes mines a manual. It also happens in other gears during acceleration and sometimes at 5k-6k rpms. It does not happen with the stock tune. Definitely not the clutch rattling.

I am into the game a little later than some, and only have the dongleless version with 1.04. I believe 1.04 is only with the dongleless version. Also, I think you have to work with Matt to get switched over, if you originally started tuning with the dongle set-up. I do remember reading where the newer files are liked to your computer and you would have to work with him if you had to replace your computer for some reason.

I am experiencing somthing very similar but it is not repeat able.
I have tech stream but what am I looking for.is it the same as the test file perameters and 2 gear hard pulls to red line?

Does anyone else experience weak engine braking going downhill? The engine just keeps revving up no matter what gear I downshift to. It is very annoying and potentially unsafe constantly hitting the brakes going down long mountain passes. Is this from the "Atkinson" cycle? If so is this something that can be tuned out?

Where I live the dump is up a half mile, 10-15 degree grade with switchbacks. I use first downhill, get up to maybe 2750 rpm max, and don't have to touch the brakes, 2nd works if it's dry and I want to go a little faster but also use the brakes before corners.

I think many on this thread have noticed, esp in low range, the engine resumes fueling around 1500 rpm. Over that, it should be engine braking.

That’s the the rev hang. If you don’t rev past around 2700rpm rev hang will kik in.it is being introduced in to all modern vehicles and is a nightmare for manual drivers.

Like @iexc said there is some component of the “rev hang” and the DFCO that cause the poor engine braking. Pick a gear that gets you into the 3k rpm range and it will do a lot better.

    @OVTune

After taking your advice and switching to the 1.04a 87 tune my pinging issue has been resolved from what I can tell. I have a CPS on order to swap mine out and I and give the 91 tune a try again.

I have still been unsuccessful in getting Techstream up and running on my laptop. If anyone could offer some advice on getting the available versions of it to load and run properly it would be welcomed. PM box is open...lol

It happens on anything over about a 5% grade, coasting downhill in any gear, not touching any pedals. There is some weak engine braking but rpms will keep climbing to 4500 rpm+ (It would go higher but I'm hitting the brakes by then).

@OVTune Does the OVTune fix this or can it be programmed to?

My truck has been doing this same thing intermittently. Can only make truck produce noise when pulling a steep grade usually at higher elevations. Most recently when pulling a trailer (3500lbs) up a moderate grade around 3500 rpm's. I am running on a stock motor and do not want to tune due to this unknown noise.

People who complain about rev hang will be happier once they allow themselves to acknowledge the fact that they drive a truck, not a racecar. Rev hang will be there. This motor doesn't need to be as responsive and hyperactively rev happy as the hot turbo hatch you used to race from stoplight to stoplight in. Plus, the rev hang has been reduced in the tune anyway. Way worse on the stock tune.

Whoah there! I’m just trying to find a solution for the lack of engine braking while going downhill in gear causing me to have to ride the brakes.

Lol sorry. Seeing any mention of rev hang is kind of a pet peeve for me, borne of months of people complaining about it.

This truck isnt bad with rev hang during normal driving, much better than early 2000s manual toyota products which had brutal rev hang, even to the point where the revs rised a bit between shifts.

But lets be honest, the throttle response from this truck is so hit and miss. There is a strange excessively long rev hang under moderate load in the upper RPM range. It makes it hard to shift smoothly without jerking it into the next gear. It doesnt happen when shifting near redline or at low rpms and loads.

Rev matching on down shift, not even while braking not to bob passengers heads (im ocd with this) is so inconsistent. Muscle memory in your foot never applies as to how much throttle to quickly give it before releasing the clutch.

The day this tune gives us near cable throttle function, I am in.

Its not even the power. Truck is fine power wise for me. Its the throttle acting like a ships telegraph which is annoying.

i hear you, but i disagree about the muscle memory and whatnot not resulting in consistent accurate downshifts. I do it every day without issue or fail. Still had issues with it on 1.03 and 1.03B, but I stopped having the issue with 1.03C and I'm now on 1.04 and still no issues with downshifting smoothly, consistently.

If it makes you feel better, it's been well established within this thread that my truck has far less issues with tunes flashed than others. @MOC221_ calls it the honey badger lol so if operator error isnt an issue (and I'm not saying you're at fault), then maybe my cement flavored unicorn is the key ingredient for some reason

Guess I should try the tune already lol.
    We have the same truck.

The thing is while it may not feel bad to some, its frustrating for peeps who have old cable operated manual toyotas. Going from my taco to my old cars (toyotas) is a breath of fresh air on the throttle behavior. Guess they dont make them like they used to lol.

I wonder if its even possible to get a 1:1 response between pedal and throttle plate in these.
For example, rev the engine in neutral with clutch pedal in = faster response. Release the pedal and try that again and you get an artificial closing of the throttle, way slower. Cars did this back in the day with dashpots on the throttle plate, but it was consistent and unobtrusive. Just to keep the throttle body from slamming shut and reducing emissions a bit.

Just voicing my take on the trucks accelerator behavior. I should get the tune but im waiting for it to mature even more.

I guess il end my rant lol. Still love this truck. Thank toyota you can even get it with 3 pedals.

You and I are on the same page sir. My biggest complaint about the M/T was the inconsistent and drunk AF throttle. I'm not going to say it's perfect (honeybadger style), but throttle response is much MUCH better tuned. You'll notice Mat is still working on it, in that he commented on making it even better (possibly with 1.05 release). I'm not sure why you're waiting to get the tune, as you'll have access to all future updates anyway.
Your call of course, but I wouldn't go back to the stock calibration if you paid me to do it.

Oh and for future reference, my truck is at the opposite end of the scale to @mZiggy 's. Redheaded stepchild of 3rd gen M/Ts. Stuttering mof@cker. Lol, anyway.. patiently awaiting update to throttle in next version of OVtune.
