Fixed slightly corroded battery terminal after today’s 40,000 mile service visit

Dealer: You’re going to need a battery service to clean the positive terminal $ 29.95 and you might need a new terminal spliced onto the cable $ 83.00 would you like to have us take care of that right now
Me: Umm no thanks I’ll take a look at it myself
Dealer: Differential fluids are going to need to be replaced also
Me: is that based on mileage?
    Dealer: no they tested it
    Me: ? How ???
Dealer: they pull a sample and use test strips
Me: oh never heard of that, I can change that myself
Dealer: mass air sensor and injectors are dirty you’ll need to get those taken care of soon
    Me: OK

So battery is taken care of ✅

Going to need to get some fluids for the diffs although it doesn’t appear that the inspection holes have ever been touched I will do it anyways

Injectors and Mass air sensor I’ll be doing some searching on TW for those before I decide how or what I’ll do
Truck runs fine and air filter has always been clean so ??

If any of you TW geniuses or gurus wanna shot me some links to shorten up my research time I would greatly appreciate it.

    I'll start looking here tonight > https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/3rd-gen-diy-maintenance-quick-reference.406712/

I'm around 40k also and just cleaned my battery yesterday with water and baking soda. Seems to be a common occurrence. My corrosion was eating away at the metal bracket too.

MAF sensor should be easy, I did it on my Celica and 05 Tacoma but not yet on my 17 so can't help there.

I do agree on rear differential though but also not helpful. It's probably listed on the sticky in main forum for typical maintenance. Or hopefully someone can chime I'm because.i need to figure this out too.

Edit: yep, check this out: https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/3rd-gen-diy-maintenance-quick-reference.406712/

The test strips are complete bullshit other than brake fluid... those can test for water content which is legit a bad thing. Otherwise, there's no test in the world that can check the viscosity and other critical characteristics of gear oil or trans fluid from a strip. The "this is clean, this is dirty, dirty is bad" samples they keep for service writers are just as much bullshit.

I wouldn't trust a dealer as far as I could throw them. I say that as a former dealer tech.

Ha. Had my 25k check. Dealer said 27.95 to clean battery terminals. I asked to come out and see. They said sure, when I looked. I asked if I could clean it while I was out there since it would take the same amount of time for me to walk in and pay for it. My invoice was 0.00 too!

Exactly what I suspected but I haven't wrenched as a daily job for 18 years now so I thought well maybe just maybe they have some new fangled technology
yes started with very little trust and it's rapidly decreasing
    Thanks for the input

I’m going with Chemical Guys too since they have a storefront near my house and was wondering about this. I just put their Jet Seal on 04JUL, within a week of buying my Taco. Is this a spray on wipe off product?

Yep, spray it. Spread it. Flip the towel, and buff. Did my entire truck in about 15 min after going through the car wash.

    Retired/Hobbyist old as f***

Love these fogs on mine too. Look good on any color truck and they are bright as F. Just aim them downward. If not the next driver you blind might be Johnny Law.

"I wanna bang your car in the weirdest way possible."

OK. $100. Just clean the gasshole when you finish.

"Dealer: You’re going to need a battery service to clean the positive terminal $ 29.95 and you might need a new terminal spliced onto the cable"

So how much to do both terminals. At least doing it yourself you know there may be some petroleum jelly used. Chances are the dealer would just give you a dry rough "cleaning". What is their hourly rate. $180 an hour.

"Dealer: Differential fluids are going to need to be replaced also"

I would have been a real jerk on this one and asked if every used Toyota, with over 40k miles on their lot, has new differential fluid. and, if they said yes, then I would ask to see the prep record or carfax record of it. There is nothing wrong with changing the differential fluid over to synthetic but there are millions of vehicles on the road with over 100k miles that still have the original fluid in the rear end. As long as the fluid is full and no seals leaking fluid is probably fine. At least you were smart enough to blow them off on the BS. I am shocked they didn't offer the $69.95 air service for your tires that have 40k miles. Freakin dealers. Can't live with them and can't legally shoot them.
