Speaker Upgrade Reccomendation Needed

Been doing a lot of research and reading, but I'm still very confused and need some reccomendations.

I have an 08 DC Sport with a Pioneer P-4901B single DIN HU (no amp) and need to upgrade my speakers. One of my OEM rear speakers is buzzing, so it's time to change them out. I am partial to Pioneer, but would consider other manufacturers as well.

Crutchfield has been some assisitance, but I'm not very knowledgeable in audio systems/parts. I'm not looking to do any rewiring, just want to keep things simple.

I'd like to stay within $300 for everything, and I will do the install.

Get something extremely efficient if you won't be running an amp. The idea is that you have a limited amount of power and you want it to go as far as possible. A less efficient speaker will need all the power the headunit can put out and possibly even more; leading to clipping.

But if you get a really efficient speaker that will play louder off less power you wont need to push the internal amp nearly as much. This will lead to better sound quality when cranking the system up.

Sensitivity and Efficiency are used interchangeably and are measured in db at 1watt/1meter. Sometimes manufacturers list the rating but at 2.83V/1meter which is misleading. A 4ohm speaker getting 2.83V is actually getting 2watts of power and will "look" like it's 3db more efficient than it really is. So if it's a 4ohm speaker, measured at 2.83V you need to subtract 3db to get the REAL sensitivity rating.


I realize that's a lot to digest and probably is more than you asked for but it's important. I'd look for something with 89db or better efficiency.


Most important thing though is to buy a speaker you think sounds good.

 

Rockfordfosgate power series are a great speaker ran from headunit power only. That's what I have in my 05 Taco

 

Pioneer TS-D6902R for front doors.
Pioneer TS-D1702R for the back.

Fits the brand you you are partial too. As well as they are great speakers. They will run about $330 for both pair via crutchfield, but do a search online and you can usually find them a tad cheaper.

These are some of the most well balanced speakers I have ever heard. Especially at these price points.

Don't forget to find the appropriate speaker spacer plates for them.

 

I would go for the JL's for that set up but that's just my opinion

 

I'm not a 6x9 kind of guy; but those aren't bad. They have a proper tweeter in the middle and are fairly efficient.

my bad, I would go with the JL Audio TR650-CSi, front and back, you should be able to find them cheaper than what crutchfield has them for, with a little bit of mdf you can get the front ones to fit and you shouldn't go too far over your $300 mark. your HU will have enough power for those speakers and they will still be able to handle an amp if you decide to upgrade later, plus they sound a hell of a lot better than those pioneers.

Thats totally subjective to each listener and also completely false in my opinion. The entire JL Evolution TR line of speakers sounds like they are in a tin can.

The Pioneer D series, in my opinion (which is shared with a lot of people who have actually listened to them) are among the most balanced sounding speakers in their price range, and I am confident they will spank the floor with those JL's in most listening tests.

 

I can't actually say I've gone that low end so you're probably right, I definitely like JL's high end stuff over pioneer's, but most of my stuff is alpine, JL a focal now.
I found my K2's sounded like shit when I get them but it turned out all I had to do was play with the setting for about half an hour, now I want a set for my taco

 

Well, I install for a living so I get to listen to speakers at all price points.

Pioneers D series (TS-Dxxxx models) are the most impressive speakers pioneer make by far, and are among the best in their price range. But they don't compete with speakers over $300 per pair.

JL's low end are far from impressive. But personally, I don't like the C2 line either, and the C5 line only marginally. Great amps and subs.

I am interested in giving a gun listen to Alpines new R series when we get them in. As well as the new R series flat subs. Otherwise, I can't really stand anything they make.

Hey man, we all gotta pay the bills. No shame in it. Your bestbuy probably turns out cars that sound good since you're there.

 

I do what I can with the product they give me to sale. Those Pioneers I mentioned to him we can order, but they aren't in the store. They sound better than the Infinity Kappa's and Alpine R series we have.

BBY does pay the bills. I make double here what 2 local higher end shops pay their installers.

 

I tried installing for a while but it didn't pay enough, plus I like it better as a hobby.
I hope to have some pics of my stuff up by the end of the week.

 

I was on a very tight budget when building my system, who the hell am I kidding I am always on a tight budget.
I am running infinity 5020's in the front.

So for 425.00 I have a sound system that is more than adequate for my needs.
The 5.25 infinity's really sound good to me, but I would suggest going and having a listen to them before buying, they can be pretty harsh and some people do not like the sound of infinity's.

Has anyone installed or know anyone who installed the Image Dynamics CTX65CS speakers in their Tacoma? I'm seriously considering buying these speakers. They're only about $200/pair and I've read nothing but good reviews on them. They supposedly offer a more preferred sound than JL Audio speakers. Heard plenty of negative reviews. Most centered on being boomy, lacking detail, and becoming muddy. Then again I say reviews are worthless. You have to listen to speakers and decide for yourself. Others treviews will never cut it.
