Saw a Taco in the work parking lot the other day - had the black inserts in the Tacoma on the tailgate, but also the Tacoma badges on the sides of the truck were raised black! Is that an add-on or is there some trim that comes with? Looked really slick, was MGM like mine!

That's what's strange - I can't tell what trim this is! There is no SR5, no TRD, nothing!

I believe some dealers in the south add them and charge quite a bit for what they are. They're overlays I'm pretty sure. I wanted black OEM badges for my 18, they don't exist unfortunately. I ended up just removing mine.

A lot of us paint/derp the Tacoma letters on the doors. And we get the vinyl inserts for the tailgate TACOMA letters. Looks 100% better!

SET (South East Toyota) offers black badge overlays as port add-on. But you can do it yourself, purchasing from @rrentrop , Amazon or Fleabay for a very significant savings.

I used these. Just can't use the grill emblem on a 2018 model. But I changed my grill to Pro model anyway.

I looked into those. I only needed the two Tacoma badges so I emailed to see if they broke apart the $100 set. They don't. I just couldn't spend $100 for two thin pieces of plastic that may come off or break in a car wash. So I removed. I think it looks better without now.

For the most OEM look the best way is to paint or use that plastidip stuff. I actually came across an extra set of side emblems for super cheap and painted mine with flat black. Over a year now and still look like the day they were painted.

The downside to overlays is as you can see in the links previously posted that there are areas that are not cut out like in the A’s. You can do it yourself and it look way more stock.

Personally I say if you get an extra set somewhere try and do that. That way you can paint or plastidip and get them as close to perfect as possible. If you dip while on the truck you can still have areas where it’s not super crisp and clean on the edges.

But..... If you take your original chrome ones off, tape every single outline and letter landmark you can. This is to ensure when you put the painted or dipped ones on, that they line up perfectly. Unless the originals ones were crooked of course. Lol!

I originally plasti-dipped my and thought it looked pretty sharp. Ended up having to get my driver's door repainted after some trail damage so the body shop painted the new badge before they put it on. Liked it so much I ended up removing the other badges and with a similar automotive grade paint. Looks factory.

How did you remove them - dental floss? Is each letter separate?

Yea you can buy these from Toyota (black lettering) the Tacoma is a little smaller than the crome. I took mine off with fishing line after sitting in the sun no problem.
