For trail comms between vehicles the handheld units are definitely sufficient. If you’re trying to hit distant repeaters you may need an external antenna connected to the handheld unit. Not sure what you mean by “rugged channels programmed”

I thought there were some channels and HAM radios that you dont need the license to use??? I could be talking pure nonsense. I like the idea of the HAM but since smaller groups dont tend to use them, I never got one. But I thought the handhelds you can buy come preloaded or something with channels??? idk. Ill have to look it up.

You’re probably thinking about radios packaged in blister packs that you can get from Cabela’s, dicks, etc etc. Those are typically FRS and/or GMRS radios and come preprogrammed with those frequencies.

The stuff from Rugged is all Race Radio type stuff. The preprogrammed frequencies are in the commercial bands that race teams and orgs use (if truly registered and legal is iffy and gray). Ham radios do not use "channels", it's all the specific frequency that you tune to.

The 5H-R (or whatever) handheld that Rugged has rebranded is capable of commercial and Ham frequencies. Any ham radio really needs the numbered keypad somewhere so that you can tune to any frequency to match the rest of the party or a repeater (with offsets).

I got my cb for free, my antenna for free and only paid for coax > HAM or rugged radios

My CB now just collects dust in my truck and my antenna acts as a corner marker for the front of my truck. HAM radios are the far better option for communication. Even within FRS bands which I may or may not have available on my HAM radio. :anonymous:

My cb also collects dust because it usually off lol. All that chatter gets in the way of music, or me putting my wife to sleep while I drone on about gear reduction, how locking differentials work etc....

Lots of bolt on chrome stuff
I'd get a RTT before a front locker, and full skids before either. Your priorities may be different than mine depending on what you like to do with your rig, though. The slickrock offers lots of traction and I did lots of stuff open/open on my first trip to Moab (before I added a rear locker to my rig). I also had enough fun to bend one of my steel skids pretty good. Comm's come in real handy too.

Gears and lockers and armor/skids over glamping material. A RTT wont get you over that obstacle any better than your ground tent. A front locker and better axle gears will help crawling around any day though.

TRD super charger, URD fuel mods and 2.1 super grip pully, Headers, 2.5" glass pack, Dana 60 front 4 linked, 14bolt rears on chev 63's, 5.38 gears, ARB locker in the front, PSC full hydraulic steering, 18" SAW 2.5" triple rate coils overs, FOA 2.5 air bumps, B&M launch controls, B&M trans cooler, 4 alpine 6X8 type R's amped, Red led rock lights, CBI front and rear bumpers (my design) CBI sliders, 4 riggid dualys front 2 in the rear, custom track bar, ARB snorkle, warn VR8000 winch, Viair 480c twin compressers..
RTT's are an accessory and not a requirement. Skids are for low riders or long trucks. Locks and gears are for people that are serious about off roading. just depends on what you want if you want style and luxury then buy RTT or even better a full on camper if you want to drag over everything then leave it low on little tires and buy skids, but if you want to crawl moab: LIFT IT, LOCK IT, HAUL IT, CRAWL IT!!

That’s right. And if you’re going to haul it, build a hobbit hole under your trailer to sleep in :D

Hard wall FTW. I remember waking up in Moab last year and a bunch of people were talking about how a wind storm kept them up in their rtt and I didn't even know there was a wind storm.

I don’t believe there was a single night all week that I went to bed sober enough to notice any wind...

There you have it folks . If you're going to buy an RTT and you don't want the wind to bother you just add alcohol.

    This is true.

Even more important to any potential passerby’s? Do NOT go near the hobbit hole if you’ve consumed too many adult beverages.
