Overhead Panel Calamity

Due to a comedy of errors during installation of mesojdm map lights, I ended up having to drop the overhead panel on my 2017 OR. Got the damn lights installed, but...

There are four red fasteners that hold the overhead panel to the roof. One of them is bent enough that it won’t stay in. Anybody know where I can buy a new one?

Don't use OEM. When I get home will post picture of the good ones from AutoZone. Much better and tighter.

 

I got a bunch for my 1st gen flairs on Amazon for less than the Dealer or Autozone/advance/oreilly.

As I recall the cost of a 2-ish pack at the parts store got me a bag of a 12 or 20 on Amazon. 1sr gen flairs were done 3 or 4 years ago, so this old fart's memory is a bit fuzzy.

So compare the cash out to your desired speed of repair.

Think of the OEM stuff as one time use. Sure you may be able to disassemble unscathed but seems like the first time installation is going to give you the tightest fit, and the more and more it gets taken apart it might begin to rattle. Also some of the generic stuff from autoparts stores can be a pain in the ass to deal with if you ever have to get it apart again.

 

Here is the OEM and a much better one from NAPA or Auto Zone.

 

Ok. Setting aside the connectors, they’re now the least of my worries.

The magic smoke appears to have left the overhead panel - the buttons illuminate but they don’t function (so no map lights, no moon roof, traction control does not turn off). Swear to god, all I did was install the @mesojdm map lights. Is it possible I’ve blown the board? Is there a way I can tell, or should I just go talk to the dealership?

 

Once the smoke is let out you can’t put it back in, looks like a trip to the dealership, explain what happened and see what they will do for you. Sometimes these simple jobs turn out to be real nightmares, good luck, they’ll have you back up after replacing the circuit board in your overhead unit.

 

Take out your mod. Get the truck back to normal. If you feel up to it try the mod again.

 

Yeah, returned to stock before getting on TW - wanted to make sure problem wasn’t in the mod. Also grabbed a wiring diagram, and checked the relevant fuses. I’m confused about how there’s anything you can do to the map light that kills the traction control controls... in my line of work there’s a lot more isolation between convenience stuff vs controls for operation.

/shrug guess I’ll go do my part to keep the service department gainfully employed.

...well at some point I’ll just live without a moon roof and crawl control for a while; according to TW I’m not supposed to need it anyways.

 

I’m just guessing here but
I think either a fuse (could be bad but appears good)
or a connector not connecting

 

Seems more likely than the whole panel frying, but my diagnostic skills have been exhausted. I’m all for the cheaper solutions.

 

Have you tried PM info MESO he might have an idea that would help.

I know others who have installed them have had some trouble/issues too. Might be a simple fix.

 

Verdict: board is crispy. Looks like I’m going to be replacing my overhead console next week, but at least it’s only $150. Oh and the stupid clips are $1.50 each so I bought a bunch of them.

Stay tuned for the thrilling conclusion, in which our daring hero exclaims: “The lights work. Huh, kinda neat.”

 

Sorry to hear of your trouble with this, OP.

Ive also learned that getting 12v constant power from the maplights To power an overhead dash cam messes with the DRL’s too. Best to run a wire from the fuse panel up the A- column, or tap into the 12v ignition switched lead feeding the mirror compass.

 

How do you think you fried your board?

What could you have done differently to avoid this?

Not being a smart ass really want to know.

 

I know I fried my board because the dealership said “yup, you fried it.”

I’m not sure what I could have done differently. I’m going to pull out my multimeter and test the new map lights to see whether there’s a problem with them, but I trust that @mesojdm didn’t screw anything up.

Originally I tried to install the map lights without pulling the overhead panel. I’m given to understand that it’s possible, but I had a lot of trouble with it. I think next time I’m going to pull the panel from the start and do the install on a nice flat surface, maybe with a grounding strap. Overkill? Probably, but...

Maybe I’m unlucky (or klutzy) but sometimes... the magic smoke just leaks out.
