Speaker Upgrade - 2012 DC

Very happy. They were a little “tinny” at first since the tweeters are mounted high in door and they put out A LOT of sound. I played with the amp gains and then the crossover frequencies a bit and got the balance I wanted. Sounds perfect (to me) now. Crystal clear highs/mids all the way through the volume range.

 

No complaints from me, but I’m no expert. For what I spent I’m very happy with everything.

 

Did this work with the steering controls and oem backup camera? I would like to change out the HD and keep the oem stuff.

 

I’m not sure about the rear view camera. My 2012 is still in the mirror. I know there are ways for the OEM camera to display on the aftermarket hu. Everything else works except for the factory hands free microphone.

 

I'm looking at thee same speakers for my truck. Did these require any cutting or splicing of factory wires or was it generally plug and play with the included Metra adapters? How helpful was the Crutchfield Master Sheet?

 

The front door speakers require cutting and not exactly plug and play. You need bend the included straps for the tweeters and rework the wiring for the speakers. Stock configuration, the audio passes thru the upper speakers to the lower speakers. Pretty simple to wire in the new speakers.

 

Do you basically cut the connector that runs into the stock tweeter. Extend the wires down to the woofer with built in crossover. Then run a wire from the woofer/crossover to the tweeter?

Im wondering if the ********* tweeter harness could eliminate any cutting. Ive never cut into factory wiring so im a little gun shy

You are correct. I’m not sure about *********, I’m comfortable with wiring so it wasn’t an issue.

If you’re replacing the HU you’ll be fine with this.

The black zip tie is where I spliced into the factory harness. I left enough on the factory harness that I cut off to reverse in the future if needed. I zip tied the factory so I wouldn’t lose it.

Are you going to add an amp to supplement the stock radio? If not, you might end up disappointed with the speakers.

 

I looked at the alpine power pack, but i think i'm just gonna stay with the plain old stock head unit for now. I definetly don't expect a big improvement until i replace the head unit.

How do you like your kenwood? Were you able to keep steering wheel controls? Is the bluetooth phone calls/texts better or worse than stock?

 

No complaints with the kenwood. I was able to keep the steering wheel controls and the usb. I didn’t not keep the factory BT mic. Audio is ok using BT for voice calls.

 

Did you rewire the speakers completely to the amp? Or did you just use the factory wiring?

If you redid the wiring, how was it? Anything overly complicated?

 

Complete rewire since all the speaker wire now comes from the amp in the back of the truck. Not too complicated to run but everything was out of the truck to put sound deadener in the floor pan so that made it easier...

 

+1 here. Son has forbidden me to cut the factory harness. Speakers I am considering (morel optimo 6.5) have external crossovers.

I was thinking I could plug the ********* tweeter adapter to the factory harness. Then, instead of connecting the power wires from the adapter to the tweeter and woofer, I would run them both to the power /- on the crossover (then connect the woofer /tweeter to the crossovers with new wiring), in theory eliminating any cutting.

Since I have little experience with wiring, does anyone who does think this will work? I have searched, and not seeing where there was discussed.

So last question: Anyone know how big the speaker opening is on a 2010 regular cab? Once the factory mount and speaker are removed...

 

Im not familiar with the regularcab, but i think all tacoma speaker openings are non-standard sizes and require an adapter. Go on crutchfield.com and put in your truck info. They will pair your speakers with a Metra adapter if needed. Mr Marv also sells adapters on tacomaworld.

 

I know I will need an adapter...the issue is Crutchfield sells up to 6 1/2 sized rings, and lists every speaker over that size (like 6.75) as incompatible. That's why I am trying to find out the actual size of the hole...I believe it will fit a bigger speaker then 6.5 with the right adapter.

 

I took a Kierkegaardian leap of faith and ordered the Morell speakers from Crutchfield. As I suspected, the 6.5 adapter included is just a tad too small for the Maximo 6 woofer. I believe the internal cutout is 5.5. The overlap is so small I am confident the speaker will fit the factory hole with the right adapter. You could probably modify it to fit...but the plastic is pretty thin.

Fortunately, I already ordered the the ********* 6.5 (5.7 internal cutout option) adapter.

I have read a lot of posts about them, but I can say I did email them first with a few questions, and they responded in less the 24 hours. we will see how delivery goes.

Anyone know where to get a wire harness for an external amp to interface with the factory harness? ********* solution is rather pricey.
