Strange drum brake noise

    As for the keys, you can avoid the Stealership $$$$$$$$$ if you research your specific key. I have a "G" key for my 2015, I think the 2014 has a dot on it (and a lot more options if it's a dot).

    Lots of bad info on this board for keys, those programmers you can buy only work for certain keys. I gave up trying to find a "G" key programmer and found a locksmith shop that charged $40 for the key and $50 to program. $90 was way less than the over $200 the dealerships wanted.

    I got my key over a year ago so things might have changed, good luck to you.

    I also have a g chipped key, bought a spare off Amazon (reviews looked promising)

    Local locksmith said he would only use his own keys, wanted $195 for the job. Guess ill need to find a different locksmith lol

    Yeah, i think they didnt find any obvious causes and just tried to guess at something.

    Noise is still there.

    After he mentioned the leaf pack, i told him i was unsure how pumping the brakes while stopped could have anything to do with the leaf pack. By the sound of his voice i could tell he started making shit up at that point.


    Midas offered to take a look at them. but im afraid any shop will just pull them off, verify that all the parts are there and call it good.

    May just have them swap the hardware kit and see if that fixes it. Take it back to les shwab and demand a refund for whatever i had to pay midas (since i now have a reciept from Les Schwab saying they checked it and all looks good)

    Ya... The Les Schwab dude is either dumb or lazy. If this where me, I'd take my truck back down there and tell the manager his shop fucked it up, and his shop gets to fix it... and don't give me any bullshit about leaf springs on a truck that isn't moving.

    Buuuut... I have been known to be a dick once in a while... so there's that.

    But seriously, they did the brake job, and that noise is NOT normal (and it's not the leafs)... you've already made an extra trip down there. They need to do the right thing.

    You gave me motivation to go down there (im a block away) and bitch. I did, i told him "ive been back here several times and am to the point im going to have another shop rebuild them and send you the bill"

    The asst. manager came out to help me, he listened and agreed its not the leaf springs (we all new that), he pulled them apart, shook/checked everything, said it looks good, the shoes are not even broken in yet, dont have perfect/even contact yet and that may be why i hear them flexing as i push the pedal really hard (noise is only when stopped and really giving it to the left pedal).

    He cleaned them off, lubed up the springs and the backing plate, noise got slightly quieter at first but slowly came back. He suggested it give them some hard miles and let them break in/wear and they should start to compress evenly. If i have any more problems bring it back and they'll take a look at it.

    The midas brake tech also suggested the same thing a while ago, give them some miles and see if the noise persists. Currently the rear brakes only have about 350 miles on them.

    I appreciate the offer, Ive pulled them apart myself, was there with the manager when he pulled them and lubed the backing plate + springs, im confident to the naked eye they look as they should. Not doubting your mechanical aptitude (although i usually doubt my own lol).



    Maybe i just need to take a chill pill, put some miles on these things and see how they sound after 2000 miles.

    I like your team!

    The pedal feels fine, the "drag" on the wheels seems good, the only thing i could think was maybe i should spin the wheel with the other side on the ground? like, maybe im feeling the opposite wheels drag when im spinning the wheel im adjusting. I just dont even know at this point, which is why i think im losing sleep over it lol.

    I battled this same noise most of last year with my rear brakes. After many iterations of cleaning and lubing, new hardware, then new shoes, the solution ended up being turning the drums.

    Since your sound seems to be coming from one side, you might try swapping the drums around and see if the noise travels to the other side.

    I'm not a tacoma expert, but when I adjust drum brakes, I adjust the star wheel 5 clicks at a time til I cant get the drum on. Then back it off three clicks. It's probably a little on the tight side and the initial layer may wear a bit quick, but I'd rather have my drums a little tighter than loose.




    Kind of like lug nuts. Until you break a stud. You should be an expert @Motofox :p

    The correct way to adjust the rear brakes is as follows:



    ADJUST REAR DRUM BRAKE SHOE CLEARANCE
    (a) Provisionally install the hub nuts.
    (b) Remove the hole plug, and turn the adjuster to expand the shoe until the drum locks.
    (c) Using a screwdriver, release the adjuster 15 notches.
    (d) Install the hole plug.

    For me it was air in the rear brake lines.

    The old brake fluid all over my rear axle should have been a sign of shit workmanship.

    I bled the brakes and got every bit of air out, been great ever since.
