I'm on the fence and could use some advice. I'm buying an OR at some point this year and don't know which direction to take. There are a bunch of used '17s for around $30k locally. I'm looking at $35k for a new '18.
I'm not opposed to buying used, but the stories about coolant leaks, low fluids, etc. have me worried that I would be buying a ticking bomb. From most accounts, the '18' appear to have the issues resolved.
The downside to an '18 is the TSS.

Any opinions about the build quality on '17s vs '18s?

    Compare the warranties.

Used 17 has already taken the financial hit. Or wait till the 19s start to roll out and get a left over 18, if you want all that safety stuff.

They all have a 100k drivetrain warranty, right? The '17 I'm looking at has the Toyota Certified coverage, which is 12k/1yr after purchase.

I'm not sure what the certified coverage is, but I would factor that into my purchase decision

The new 18 will have a 5/60 drivetrain warranty.

After traveling quite a bit with adaptive cruise, it's really my favorite feature going from my 2nd gen to the 3rd. You might want to factor that in. It'll only be on the 18.

My wife's car has adaptive cruise and it is nice, until you realize that the guy in front of you is going 10 below the limit and you have been following him for 20min, lol.

I bought a CPO ‘17 Off Road and wouldn’t go back. You get the same truck for well under MSRP and you have a warranty that’s almost double that of the new warranty. I got mine with 7,500 miles for 30k.

There are still some 17s that are new out there. If you are flexible on color and willing to travel to get one, you could probably score some big savings. Just a thought you could entertain.

Check the 17’ prior to purchase and check for fluid levels and what not. What coolant leak stories has there been? This is the first time I hear about this. I’ve owned my 17’ for over a year now and it’s getting close to 20k and I’ve had 0 issues with it. If it’s only 5k for brand new though, why not? Or wait for the 19’ since were so close. The 18’s will start going on sale towards the end of the year to make room for the 19’. DCLB 17’s are going for around 32k-34k in my area with under 20k miles almost stock. So if you can get one for 30k or under that’s a great deal.

Someone without an 18 claiming it's a bad thing seems to be a common theme on here lately.

Oh you know the usual two people out of 400k kinda epidemic sweeping the nation. It's a non issue unless you make it one.

I figured:rofl: maybe it’s on par with the rear howling issue that’ll make your truck fall apart.
I haven’t really come across any serious issues in the 3rd that I am aware of.

Yup. The howl of the grenading diff that was just a harmony tone not a mechanical failure. Or just like all those hundreds of thousands of quart low transmissions. Hasn't been a damaged one yet. Lots of people worked over nothing.

Probably not apples to apples, but for what it’s worth here are my thoughts. When I last went shopping for my truck I had the same dilema. That was until I found a low mileage certified used taco that was about 7 grand less than a shinny new model. Now it helped that it had been debadged by the previous owner and the dealer was selling it as an SR5 when indeed it was TRDOR. Now almost 10 years later, I don’t think I could tell a difference between driving an ‘09 or ‘10. If you only want to keep it a couple of years hen that might be a different story.

TSS stands for all the safety features introduced in the 18s. It's not just adaptive cruise.
