Usually people trading in a 2017 didn’t like the truck for some reason. Could of had problems. Highly doubt they were rentals but even so who really wants a rental someone beat the shit out of. I had a ex Jeep rental. Needed new heads about 10k later. Luckily it was done under warranty. Got rid of that piece quick. Personally I would opt for the 2018. You can get the trim and color you want, and not have to worry about possibly inheriting someone else’s problems. These trucks hold their value so your not saving much buying a used one

    This.

The price difference long term if you are not a frequent car swapper is worth it to get exactly what you want out the gate to potentially prevent you from spending more money on a used truck to make it 'right' when it could have been from the get go. Also, beat the absolute snot out of the dealer and the price difference will be even smaller. I bought a used 16 warrantied bumper to bumper to 100k, and brought it back a week later. I made them give me all my cash back, more money for my original trade on the 16, sell me the new one 6k under msrp, and wrap my new car to 100k for free. My payment ended up being 95 dollars more a month. Is a new car exactly the way you want it worth it to you for a bit of money? It was for me.

Why is TSS such a bummer for people?

I would imagine the same reason any other technology was when it was 'new' - imagine the uproar when ABS or airbags showed up for the first time! 'I don't like the bumpy feeling in my foot!' 'What if the bag breaks my nose???' etc.

I personally haven't had a problem with mine just yet, though it's only been 500 miles.

Some people have had issues after lifting and replacing bumpers. Also a few threads on the brake assist kicking in when not really needed. I don't know how big of a deal that is in reality. Could be typical enthusiast forum overrepresentation.

I was in the same boat. Couldn't decide between a 17 and an 18, until I went to Texas for work, for a week. Drove a Corolla that had TSS in it, and I was sold. Pre-collision saved me in the San Antonio rush hour traffic, when someone darted in front of me and hit the brakes... After I got back... Got my 18 OR. Adaptive Cruise was also nice, on my 10 hour drive to and from NC a couple weeks ago too lol.

Because one person said they didn´t trust it, then the word spread online and now people who have never even heard of it or what it does or how it operates have issues with it.

You do realize they sell 20k tacomas a month. A few threads is a mighty small sample size. If there was actual problems there would be a stop sale and recalls on them. You know how many people on here take the sensor off and rig up makeshift guards and brackets so they can run different grilles? It's pretty common. Not all, but most of the TSS issues I've seen are self inflicted.

I don’t know. Only 5k between a used one and new one. Better finance rate on new. I’d probably go new.

Have to be closer to 10k savings to get the used one for me.

I love my 2018. Only reason I could see to wait is if you really want a discount as dealers clear inventory.

Buying a 2017 to avoid TSS, or it being a “downside” seems like a backwards way to look at it. I really don’t see the issue w/ TSS.

I would not worry one bit about something being wrong with the 17 because it is used. Many people trade in after short period because after they get it they decide they don't like it or decided they want to go a different route for some reason. Warranty covers whatever. But what you think is best deal and what satisfies you!
