That's interesting. I did wonder if the misfire could be the result of dirty injectors from all the lugging the engine does. I'm forever leaning hard on the gas pedal to maintain speed, mostly because the trans seems to be in the wrong gear, yet it's so reluctant to shift down. I'm usually driving around at or below 1,500RPM, and a lot of my town driving is as low as 1,100RPM. This can't be healthy for the engine over prolonged periods. Even when I tap the gas pedal to shift down, it will shift back up again soon after unless I continue to accelerate.

I just purchased a new 2018 TRD OR 2 weeks ago and i have noticed a similar issue under light load. I cranked out the miles and just passed 2000 today, it seems to be a better with the more miles under its belt.

The engine has self cleaning injectors. I think the bulk of the issues are with the transmission. The engine is bulletproof.

OK, that would most likely rule out my theory then. Not sure that comforts me though, don't really like the idea of transmission issues either...
The other thing I've read in a few places now is that it could be the Atkins cycle engaging when it shouldn't. I prefer the sound of that as it could probably be fixed with the OV tune. It might also explain why the "misfire" doesn't register while hooked up to the computer...

Hopefully the dealership will be able to shed some light on the cause next week, although I'm not holding my breath based on past experience!

Mine does it too. 6th gear around 2000-2500 rpm at moderate load. Its done it since new. Sometimes less or none at all. Its very light but its there. I have read multiple accounts of this so not too worried.

Ya I've got 2,300 on mine now and I agree with lowtiderides it has got a lot better. I'm starting to think maybe it's right on the edge of Atkinson cycle and learning where it should and shouldn't engage it. After some discussion with my dealer they said if it would give me some peace of mind they would give me a lifetime powertrain warranty. So they wrote up the paperwork. I honestly love the truck and am just gonna drive it and see what happens.

That would appease me enough to keep the truck I think. Not that I'm too concerned it's going to develop into a terminal problem, it's more of an irritation than anything, but a lifetime powertrain warranty would make it easier to swallow...

I'm assuming that you haven't heard about the 6A trans "learning" your shift "habits"? Apparently that lasts up to 1,200 miles.

I'm over 10k miles right now. It's changed a little over time, you could describe it as a marginal improvement, but it's still not what I'd consider acceptable for a vehicle that cost almost $50K (CAD) and in it's third year of production too. I get that it's most likely down to Toyota wanting to meet emissions/fuel economy standards, but it's still pretty frustrating.

I would have to wonder if it could be the gas your are putting in it? Maybe a particular fuel tanker that supplies the brand of fuel you buy in your area?

I have 2018 DCSB TRD OR and have the same issues. I bought mine in March and have had it back to the dealer for a couple things (Bed misaligned, dead battery cell, missing/stutter, stumbling/hesitating engine issue and dead zone in acceleration) and the answer is always the same “Operating as Designed”.

I now have 4600 miles and some days it runs great and the next it back to its old ways :/

The most “Jelke and Hyde” truck or vehicle I’ve ever own! But I love it.

I’ll eventually get the OV Tune.

Sounds a lot like mine. Some days it will run a lot better than others. I've also noticed that a moderate headwind can make the difference between a smooth journey and the truck struggling to maintain a steady 55-60mph without excessive hunting. It really doesn't take much to upset it.

All this is with just me in the cab and an empty bed/no trailer. I hate to think how it would be when carrying a load, given that this is the purpose of the vehicle. Throw in a few other small niggles and now this stutter, and I'm slowly losing confidence in the truck.

As a side note, my wife drives a '17 corolla, and we've both noticed a decline in quality compared with previous models. I've always held Toyota in high regard, but I'm not so sure anymore. Not to knock the Tacoma, I do love it on the days where it behaves, but that's not as frequent as I'd hope. I still feel it was the better choice, compared with the 1/4 ton alternatives, although I don't feel that's a great measure of quality!

That's my worst nightmare, when you know something is wrong with your truck but the stealership won't/can't figure it out and fix it. Hope you get it squared away, seems like a lot of ecms shipped out with "glitchy" software

I've been doing a lot of research and im really thinking it's just a junk tune. I think the ovtune is coming in the near future.

Yeah mine does this too. But not at low rpms. I am not easy on my truck, I'll set the cruise and let that motor eat. Sometimes while pulling at hill at 4500rpms (empty) it'll get that hesitation/ stutter. I'm curious if it's a tune issue as well because I usually run 91 octane. Lemme know what you figure out please!

I've had other brand vehicles where when it dies, you stop with no warning. Just coast to a stop. It can go in a second with zero warning, or it can take its time and give you poor performance.
CPS's are not new to Tacomas or any other vehicle. I have had problems with them for 25 years. Nothing new.
A brilliant design would be to put two in one sensor, one as a backup. Throw a code when one goes so you can take care of it at a later time. But that might cost an extra 10 bucks.

Why not three so if the first and second go there will be a backup for the backup?

Some cars do use two for performance not reliability so your thinking is on the right track. Good job.
