Hi all. New to TW and looking to buy my first tacoma in August when I get back to the states.

Looking for a taco that will have no problems getting anywhere, but not necessarily looking run any hard trails with it. Thats what the bike is for :) Need it to be comfortable to live in and be able to haul all of the toys with me.

Long bed is a must. Deciding between AC or DCLB. Open to suggestions either way. I will be adding a removable raised bedframe and topper to make a comfortable sleeping set up. Kayak and box on top and dirtbike either with a small trailer or hitch/swing arm set up.

Would pay up to 25k for the perfect truck as is. 20k range for one I will build out. Looking for 2nd gen with less than 100k and a clean title.

Open to any and all suggestions and if anyone has anything available early August in the Iowa/Wisconsin area send me a message! Anything in the Denver/Moab area as well.

Also if anyone has any tips on builds for a camper set up, send them my way!

Welcome to TW! In the 20k range you are probably looking at a 10+ yr. old Tacoma with 100k miles on it depending on specs.

Nice looking truck! But I’m looking for more of the dirtbag special type taco. One I can just drop the tailgate and sleep for the night or weeks on end far away from cell service. RTT and fully modded trucks are a bit much for me to start with.

To be honest a 4x4 van would suit me just fine except 60k+ price tag and shitty GM quality.

Was thinking more along the lines of a mostly stock TRD OR (still deciding between access cab or DCLB). What are some of the pros/cons between the two?

I’ll definitely add some basic mods down the line. For now I just need reliable, comfortable and capable for cross country drives and or USFS / off the grid “roads”

I spend most of the year in Moab but I have two wheels to get my off road fix!

If I had to do it all over again I would go with a access cab long bed offroad which is hard to find. If you dont mind adding lockers a sport or sr5 would be fine.

How tall are you? Is it going to be just you sleeping in bed ? I have slept in the back of my short bed with my feet hanging out onto the tailgate with a tarp covering the back. It was very comfy but rain or mosquitos would have made it miserable real quick.

Edit: Were offroads ever available with crew cabs and long beds?

Welcome my man! Might I suggest you look at a habitat camper, pricey but everything you’ll ever need (maybe more)

Haven’t figured out how to reply just yet. Ha. But I’m 6’1 and my girlfriend is 5’ short but we could easily sleep in the back if it’s long enough. TRD OR access cab was my original choice. Is the access cab and DC long bed the same length bed though?

As far as the habitat camper goes it looks way too nice for me! Mostly just thinking of an efficient system of 2x4 and plywood that I could sit up comfortably and lay down comfortably with a high top topper.

For the most part it would just be me with a shit load of gear. And the occasional weekend trips with the girlfriend.

Ok I’m on the lookout for a mostly stock TRD OR AC for around $20k!

    Let the hunt begin! :)

what is the process or cost of adding lockers? Is that the only big difference between OR and sport/sr5?

I have not priced lockers but I'm sure it's around 3k$ for front rear and air. ARB makes the kits.

The ORs have rear lockers and front Atrac with simulates a locker. I'm not sure what all the sports/sr5s have. I think its open/open which is 1 wheel in the front and 1 wheel in back not moving once you loose traction. If you have ever watched a line of tacomas on the trail the ORs go right over stuff that sports need to find the perfect line to get up or just sending it causing a lot more wear and tear on the truck.
