Hey all! Quick question. After doing some research I’m considering running 285/75r16s and I want to preserve whatever MPGs I can salvage. I’m having a hard time finding 4.10 or 4.30 gears. I don’t want to go to 4.56 or 4.88 because this is my daily and I do a lot of highway driving. I also don’t plan on going any bigger in tire size than 33”. Has anyone had any luck finding these gears?

What gear does it currently have?

I believe it has 3.91 from the factory

Currently, the only aftermarket gear option for 3rd gens is 4.88's. You might be able to find 4.10's since I believe thats what comes in the trucks that have the M/T.

I don't think 3.91 to 4.10 isn't gonna do squat in terms of correction on your final gear ratio with that much tire change.

Certainly not for the price that will be paid. For both differentials.

Do you have a 3rd or 2nd gen? Your pic kind of looks like a 2nd. I have been researching this too but I am leaning towards 4.56 as that will give me a good mix of dd and off road. I have not seen anything worth while for 4.10 or 4.30.
    I have a 2nd gen!

Never mind I finally saw that this is in the 3rd gen forum. Please ignore me. Sorry!
3rd gen then 4.88 is your next best option

Keep it stock. There isn't enough difference in 33" tires vs stock to justify the costs of re-gearing. Once you get to 35's you need to.

Have you ran 33s? If so how sluggish was it and how did the MPGs suffer? Would recalibrating the speedo help the AT with gear hunting?

Just be prepared for your fuel economy to disappear no matter what you do.

    3.5L struggles :anonymous:

Most people on this site are likely running 33s .. with the 3.5L, you’re looking at a 4mpg hit at least. I went from 20-22 depending on where I was driving for the week to 16-17 steady now.

    No.

    And no recalibration available.

You can correct the display of speedo and odo with a hypertech unit, but neither the ECU nor the transmission know that

Thank you all for the help! After my 265/75r16s wear out I’ll probably just eat the power loss and go to 285s. By then the truck will be paid off and 3-4mpg loss won’t hurt quite as bad. I really wish they made a 4.30 gear set for these trucks, that seems perfect for a weekend warrior build that (I think) a lot of us are going for.

    consider 255 85 16s.

You get your full 33" and if on OE fitment wheels, no modifications are needed for clearances.

There is a thread around here something like 'the skinny on skinnies' or some such where you can read up on that option.

Won't help your gearing, but will reduce some pavement friction.

Also, you'll want to calculate your MPG by hand and factor in the % ODO reduction to get an accurate number, as your snazzy dash unit will be wonky. And show a bigger hit than you actually get.

Hey man we’re from the same neck of the woods! And I was looking at 4.56 but that seems a bit tall for 33s and highway driving. I drive up to Flagstaff from the valley about twice a month and, although the extra power would be amazing up the hills, I wouldn’t want to hit 3000 rpm at 8mph. I don’t plan on adding too much weight either. Just maybe 200lbs of armor and siders.

Good shout! I considered this option but I can’t get past the skinny look. I’m on Mickey Thompson Classic iii 16x8 wheels with 0 offset so I’m not quite as concerned with rubbing. I hear Toyota makes a 4.10 for the MTs but idk if they sell just the parts.

Looks are often what cause men to marry women that turn out to be less than they expected.

I think that happens with vehicles and mods too.

I bet Mickey Rooney (8 wives) would have owned an early version of Jay Leno's garage if he'd been a gear head.

I run larger 33s and it's fine. I'd wait and drive on them before going to the regear.
